.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

64gr Federal Power Shok & 64gr Winchester Power Points. I’d also try Hornady’s 55gr soft points….as long as it’s not the SX version

I picked up some of the cheap 50 packs of
55gr Hornady SP. This thing seems to like them. I was short on time so just a 3 round group but it has promise. Not bad for $0.60 a round. Thanks for the tip

If we’re playing show n tell, I wanna play. Ahead of schedule for this whitetail season. Pretty excited to see what these 77TMKs do in person. Not too shabby for a gas gun, I’ve had this barrel for 15 years with countless rounds thru it. There’s either 11 or 12 in there and didn’t let but 3 sec between shots.

Good looking rig

Finally got my .223 all set up; It's a Howa Mini cut down to 16.5" in a Stocky's stock with a AB A-10 7.62 can. I also have a B&T TiGer that's way lighter and sounded quieter to my ear. It will almost certainly be on their during hunting season.

I haven't put in extensive bench time yet, but it's showing promise with 75gr AAC Saber Black Tips...about 1.25". That was relatively quickl with black flies and kids begging to shoot. Can't put too many down range since their out of stock and I understand Palmetto State is having some supply issues.

Hopefully me and the kids can test it out on whitetail this fall. Don't think I'll be coming a cross any brown bears in New England though! Well done @Luke S & Son!

I’m a big fan of the Sabres but I asked at one of the PSA stores last weekend and they basically said “no idea if/when they’ll be back”. So I’m in the same boat. I’ve got some but I’m just holding onto them for now. I’m fortunate that basically all the 75/77 gr offerings I’ve shot are same poi at 100 so I’ve been shooting OTM for practice and use the Sabre and Tmk for hunting.

More details. I volunteer with a Christian non-profit taking kids on outdoor trips. This kid has been with us since he was 10, always had a great attitude and a servant heart but he never got to be in on a bear kill. So when I saw a smaller grizzly on a bait I asked if he wanted to try the next day. We'll a different and bigger bear showed up.
First hit was a perfect behind the shoulder shot. The bear turned and ran, we both fired again, both follow up shots were quartering away shots that stopped just under the hind leg in the "arm pit." I'm guessing the far leg came forwards as the bear galloped. Neither follow up reached vitals so the first lung shot did the trick. The bear was dead maybe 50 feet from the bait.

As far as time to death the 223 was as good as anything I've used on a grizzly (excluding CNS hits). No entrance bleeding or exit. I was a bit surprised because the lung holes seemed a bit smaller then reported by others, definitely not "soda can" sized and definitely smaller then a 6.5 Grendal with ELDMs. Hopefully we can try more. This was an ULUL rifle i built. Kids love it and ring steel at 300 yards all the time.

That's good to know... though a bummer. Planning to hunt with them so I'll hold on to the 30 or so I have and just dial the scope on the couple inches when it's time. I have a few boxes of 70gr tsx that are an option also; a more reliable exit could be nice for the dense woods I hunt in. The AAC BTHPs were also shooting pretty well so they'll make a good practice round for now.
