Nothing new here, but figured I’d post another elk to the top of the list for those not reading the entire thread through. Two years ago switched from 270wsm to the 223 77tmk combo. Since then it’s got use on an elk, a caribou, six whitetails, and an antelope. No regrets so far.

So serious question, if the 223 or 22s in the general opinion are valid for most any big game, why isn’t the 5.7 the best pistol cal for intended use. Personally imo it’s better than any 9mm, it’s easier to shoot, has less recoil, holds more rds, has extreme velocity, and its devastation on target with soft points is great.

Still many or even most think the 5.7 is somehow inadequate for sd. Thoughts on why the king of fudd rounds, that being the 100 plus year old 9mm, seems to be the end all be all. And as for $, if you go +p or premium 9 ammo then it’s not much cheaper if any than good 10mm, 45, 40, or even 5.7.

Again serious question, even though it’s a little off topic but does the same logic apply.

I know I'm an FNG, and it might ruffle feathers, but your opinion is not based on facts. Some of what you have said is true, but the terminal effectiveness of 5.7 falls below 9mm... and that is why its not used. The depth of penetration is not sufficient with most commercially available ammo, and when it is, the total wounding effect is less than what you get with common handgun rounds.

And that goes beyond the scope of this thread, so that's all I have to say about it here.

I think there are more than a few 5.7 fans here, myself being one of them. But since this is a hunting thread, doesn’t come up that often.

First time out this year with the 223 since antlerless season in December. Wind was about 15 up to 20 and sure wasn’t that much where I was shooting from which made me miss twice. First shot was low. Shot 2 and 3 was a miss and had me scratching my bald head. 4 was high left and 5-8 was in the big splash in the red and then got sloppy on the last one just to the right of the red. I’m guessing the steel is 8.5x12.5, haven’t measured it yet but will on Wednesday.

Not the most stable platform but a round bale hauler works in a pinch. I couldn’t use a sweatshirt or gloves for a rest on it as it was too high for me to begin with and would have been worse had I used something for a rest. Sitting on my butt. Had to cant the rifle to center it on the target, good enough I guess.

Steel is a piece of vault so extremely hard and barely scuffs from a 223 at distance. You can make out the 4 hits in person in the big pock mark.

The more I shoot the more I see and understand the effects of a poor setup or awkward position.
Drives home the reality that just because I can hit at a certain distance when everything is right
doesn't mean I can hit as well when everything is not right.

I like how Thomas from THRL.NO says you don't commit to taking the shot on an animal
until you have things right and not before.
