I really like this topic. The creed case does very well in 25, 6, and 22. I have all three in various configurations. 6mm is hard to beat for a deer rifle, plus you'll have factory ammo availability. Now with 22 coming on the scene with good support, would be a good option as well.

How many rounds you gonna shoot per outing and per year?

Factory ammo or do you load your own?

Will you use brake or suppressor?

22 sure sounds nice for kids but barrel life is short enough with a 6 and I like all the factory 6mm offerings. So answer would be 6.

If going for mainly targets and whitetails for the kids, 223 sounds best. Can buy factory ammo for what it costs to load 6 creed. Can shoot to your hearts desire at the range and not worry about frying the barrel.

Exactly what I was thinking. 22 CM short barrel life so for targets and some WT's for kids I'll vote for .223.

Don’t overlook a Howa mini in 6 ARC. I know it’s not a Creed, but it will be low recoiling and have great barrel life.

Bumping this.

Planning to put together something for the kids. Something to practice and learn marksmanship with, as well as grow and hunt with.

It’s easier and cheaper to swap my barrel on my standard bolt face tikka than it is to find a reasonably priced 223 Tikka, so I’m looking at these 3 options in a 16” barrel with the suppressor. Admittedly, just having the kids use an AR is the easiest and cheapest option but I’d like to get them used to a bolt action. I handload so factory ammo isn’t necessary, but brass availability is a thought. Generally I buy enough at 1 time to last the life of a particular barrel, but if it doesn’t exist then it doesn’t exist.

I do not anticipate shots exceeding 300 yards unless I am using the rifle (let’s be real, I’m going to shoot it more than they will). Has anybody compared the velocity of all 3 at a given barrel length with the “go to” bullet for that cartridge and checked wind deflection?

Given that set of parameters, I think I'd lean 22BR. Better barrel life than CM, uses your bolt face, closest to .223 recoil that I'm aware of on that .473 bolt face. Brass shouldn't be too hard to come by, and by all accounts I have seen it's an easy cartridge to find a good load and keep stable.

@TxLite with a 300 yard limit, I wouldn't be too terribly worried. Any of these calibers will do what you want.

16" will certainly limit your velocity, but at 300 you'll sill have plenty for medium game.

Decide what your priority is. If it's recoil, go 22 creed or 6 ARC. If it's more speed or higher BC, go 6mm Creed. If it's highest BC, go 25 Creed. All great options.

Be sure to check your suppressor specs. Some cans are not rated for a creed size case in short barrels.

Good luck with your decision and keep us updated on your results. Buy you some RL26 if you can find it to get the best speed out of a creed size case in a short barrel

Thanks. No issues on the suppressor. Currently shooting an 18” 7prc

I’m leaning towards the 22 or 6 creed for recoil since it’ll be a learning platform for the kids. 6 arc is also a thought but with it going on a tikka I’ve got the room to go up the 6 creed and can’t imagine the creed being bad in the recoil dept.

How is the feeding on the BR? I don’t want to be fighting with getting it to feed properly if it can be avoided

For what it's worth. A 22 / 6 arc upper is easy, as they progress and deal with recoil better you can move them to a bolt and keep the ar for yourself.

That’s also a consideration. I’ve got a 6.5 Grendel or a 7tw 556 that would work great with the 77tmk, and I like idea of an adjustable stock. Just less chance of an accidental double tap with a bolt action when learning and I wouldn’t have to single load the mag. I may still go this route.

The 223 tikka is the answer. Even suppressed the 22CM has more pop than you expect, and it doesn’t take all that many rounds for the cost difference to have paid for the 223.

Of those, a 22CM but barrel life would concern me. Prrsonally, I would buy a 223 especially since you reload. You can tailor your bullet selection.
