2025 Whitetail Meatpole

IL firearm buck. Archery season has been a grind. I’ll take some luck every now and again.

I still have plenty of years left to hunt for shooting more bucks to be hung inside the house so this young 4x4 was good enough for me. View attachment 972313
Something about seeing these western mountain whitetails gets me fired up because they are so overlooked compared to other species. Having spent my entire life hunting the high elevations near the Smoky Mountains, I would love to try my hand out west chasing whitetail.

It’s fun for sure. Was doing some contract work for a big timber company that day so took advantage of already being out there.

Wasn’t too high on this one (~3000 feet ASL). Every time I’ve been in your neck of the woods and seen stands, I couldn’t imagine being used to hunting like that. My 2 tree stands are used over bear baits and that’s it.

Ohio buck for the old man. Buck showed up during the rut and stuck around for a couple weeks, but almost always nocturnal. Finally slipped up on 11/23. Thankfully cousin was there to help with the track

My 2025 Whitetail. Found this buck bedded down at 80 yards, and he just wouldn’t get up. Ended up shooting him in the neck in his bed, and when we got to him his right rear leg was shattered and sticking out thru the hide. Upon quartering him, the part sticking out of the hide was a giant abscess surrounded by broken bones. His body was also pretty skinny.

Didn’t draw squat for tags at home here in montana so been hunting otc. Fortunately I can buy a few whitetail doe tags in my area. Been helping a local landowner by taking a few off his farm. First picture was 210 yards double lung and top of aorta quartering to and exited opposite in front of hind leg, down in 70. Second was this am, 300 yards double lung and heart, down in 25.
