First South Carolina longbeard of 2025. He didn’t talk much. Once in the tree, once when he hit the ground, I got him to answer again at about 11, and finally about 1 PM. I shot him at 15 minutes later at 25 yards. I knew he was henned up, but would eventually come looking. Relocated twice and persistence paid off. 870, TSS 7s 25 yds.

Congrats to your son! How do you guys like the Spur?

Love it. Build quality is excellent. It’s nice and short. It weighs more than other single shot .410s but not in a bad way. Recoil is nothing. It handles extremely well and the pattern is really good. Zero complaints and I’d highly recommend it.

They must be popular. Seem to be out of stock at a lot of places. Are you running a red dot on yours?

How does it compare to the Stevens 301...I noticed that the Spurs are about twice the cost of the Stevens...worth the extra $$?

They’re just so new that CVA hasn’t got them stocked at all their dealers yet. I found one from Tombstone Tactical and they shipped it to my FFL. I have a Trijicon RMR on it

I also have a 301 that I’ve got listed for sale. If it doesn’t sell I’ll keep it also. They’re quite different. The Stevens has a longer barrel but it’s much much lighter at like 4.5 pounds. It shoots a quality group with its stock turkey choke as well. The trigger is better on the CVA. The Stevens trigger is much stiffer but it works. CVA also has adjustable comb pieces and LOP inserts. The Stevens has an actual safety in addition to the hammer. CVA just has the hammer only.

I’d say if you want a budget gun that will kill turkeys just the same, the Stevens is totally fine and a bargain for the money. If you want a shorter barrel (though heavier), most adjustments in the stock, a better trigger, and better fit and finish then the CVA would get the nod.

Despite both being break action single shots they’re kinda apples/oranges.
