2025 Small Game thread

Okay, I'm now hooked on bunnies. Especially pretty white ones because I want to tan them and try to make things like mittens. This guy was a chonker.

Anyone hunting them at night? Seems like that is when they are active. Was wondering if thermal scope or headlamp is the way to go. Any tips greatly appreciated.

A rock chuck, or officially a marmot.
Oh! Ok. Closest thing we have here are groundhogs and while I have (rarely) seen them here at home, I haven't ever shot one. People used to see them as threats to cattle because of their den-holes but right here in middle TN the only 'hole' threat we have comes from our (karst) geology, not our groundhogs. So I've always left them alone.

I use 22lr using the Winchester supers. 36gr i believe. copper plated hollow points. They do okay. Pelt damage is minimal but if youre not careful skinning them, you are bound to do more pelt damage than the bullet. And I'm also usually within 100yards. I just walk around until I bump em. They take off running and I try and shoot it as its moving. Have yet to see any before they see me!

What caliber did you shoot him with? And any pelt damage? I've been shooting them with 22lr subsonics. But it's gotta be a head shot and I need to be with 75 yards.
77gr OTM in 556 at about 75ish yards or so. I didn’t look for any pelt damage. I took the pic and continued my walk. On my way back there was a second one chewing on him so I shot it as well.

I’ve had a pretty good squirrel season so far!!

I love the single barrel.

I still have the Stevens 94 20 gauge 'youth' model my dad bought for me when I was a kid, and it does almost daily duty on the farm here. It's my ATV gun when doing chores and the kids have killed squirrels and one turkey with it. It killed the squirrel in the first post of this thread - we were visiting the in-laws and it was easier to stick a shotgun in the car for the trip than a scoped/suppressed .22lr.
