2025 elk meat pole

Colorado 1st Rifle. Zero point unit. Opening morning. Guided my buddy for his first ever hunt. Told him he didn't suffer enough killing this beauty at first light on opening morning on his first ever hunt. Love the wave of the main beam after the 4ths.

Nice one ! I got one of my buddies into hunting and he killed in one day for his first 5 or 6 hunts. Most amazing beginners luck I have ever seen. Now, he has to work for it like the rest of us 😂

A new baby boy put a limit on my time to hunt this year. I was thrilled to arrow this Idaho cow at 48 yards.

Congrats on your new son!!

My best Wyoming bull to date, had a great hunt trying to get to the herd bull within a group of over 50 elk, we bumped several satellite bulls a couple times and thought we were done, but got up and went after them again and got into them. The most exhilarating 2 hours I’ve spent hunting in my life. No idea what he’ll score but he’s got some mass and length, 50.5” left beam, 53” right beam.

Filled a cow tag on opening morning (August 15th). I came across the herd the evening of August 14 and then found them again bright and early the next morning not too far away. Snuck into 356 yards and was able to put a gal on the ground right where she stood. Psyched to start the big game season with meat in the freezer, now I can be picky the rest of the year.

well placed poke!!!!

So just got this back from the processor. I only got 95 lbs of meat from the four quarters (half that is burger @ 10% suet so ~5 lbs added) plus the ~25 lbs of meat I processed myself. Making total yield of pure elk meat ~115 lbs (95 lbs + 25 lbs - 5 lbs suet = 115 lbs) Am I crazy? It seemed light on pick up but I dont have before weights and finally just weighed it. I'm about to call and dont want to sound accusatory. One bullet through the lungs, nothing bloodshot on the meat, just hair when dropped off.
i shot a big bodied 5x5 last year and only got like 125lbs of meat back after sending it to a processor. that will be the last time i dont process an animal myself. i shot a 2.5 year old raghorn this year and got close to 150 lbs. i think processors are pretty judicious with their trimming.

So last time I took an elk to the processer they weighed the quarters that I brought in, they came out to be 300 pounds for all the meat, quarters, neck, backstraps, etc. bone in when I picked up it I got 260 pounds back, that does include the big femur bones I wanted to get back. This was a very big bodied bull, biggest I've gotten/seen before out of quite a few.

Now, I have also seen very small bodied bulls that would warrant getting not much meat back, and there could have been some spoilage.

But did you weigh the meat at drop off to see what you brough in? I know if felt heavier when you were carrying it but that can be deceiving lol.
