1st bull. MT public land archery general tag.

Bit of a rodeo, came to full draw and the arrow popped off the string... had to fix that while he was looking at me. Broadhead still on the arrow rest and the knock resting on top of my bino harness.....
suboptimal.

Luckily he was ready to fight my friend who was calling for me so he wasn't that worried about me fixing myself.
Got the first arrow in him, 35 yards, was a little far back (ended up thru the offside lung), he took a couple steps and i was able to stop him with a yelp and shoot again, second arrow double lung. He went about 60 yards and tipped over.

I'm a streaky fella. First 4 years didn't kill an elk. Then killed 3 years in a row. Then a 3 year drought. But fellas, it feels damn good to be a g again.

Heart pounding experience. Had this guy chase a satellite up a game trail straight at me. I had to jump out of the way to avoid getting run over and managed the composure to fling an arrow at 2 yards. Had to come off the string and just eyeball it!

First elk hunt. Solo/DIY/Public in one of the classic "rugged, steep" 0/1 point SW Colorado units.

The kill happened at 11k' and 7 miles away from the truck, but I was able to reposition for a shorter/steeper route after the first load (ended up being 3.5 miles and 1.9k' of vertical one way). Weather was perfect for meat preservation. That 5 trip / 2.5 day solo packout was a spiritual experience.

Really thankful for the ability and opportunity to chase these incredible animals in the land of the free.
