This was the first year I decided to devote most of my archery time to elk. I just wanted one with a bow. I would have been thrilled for a cow.

I patterned these guys last year, but they went nocturnal on me. Was hoping they would be back again this year and I'd get a shot at one. I haven't killed enough elk to know what is considered pretty big. But this one felt pretty big. I feel so blessed for the opportunity, and more importantly successfully harvesting him with a bow. If I never shoot another, I'm good.

Oh, and talking about thinking outside of the box to hunt these guys. I needed to intercept them before they got to their bedding area. There was no way to put a stalk on them. I found a pinch point with some trees so I climbed one and used my saddle. At that point it just came down to dumb luck. But that's hunting for you. Best laid plans in the end comes down to luck.

Thats not thinking outside the box to me. same thing as bowhunting whitetails
Letting them come to you VS chasing them all over the place..... crazy how effective that can be
