Made a perfect stalk on this bull, 60 yards in some cliffs, bedded in mahogany, never pulled back my bow as his 75 cows kept him covered up. 3 nights later he came in to water right at sunset! Day 7 of the hunt, 11 days solo (drop camp) such a blast!
Awesome! I'm curious how you (assuming) did a backpack hunt with your pup? Id love to take my dog hunting, but figured the logistics and additional stuff not being focused on hunting makes it tough.... Especially archery!

Recon is 8 months old, he’s the steadiest dog I’ve ever seen. His dad is the breeders personal dog, and he told me his dog has seen 20+ bow kills including spot n stalk elk and antelope.

I used hand signals, I would lay him down about 50 yards before I got to where I wanted to be, if the elk moved off and I needed to reposition I’d call him to me and repeat the process.

We were in bow range of elk 7 times and he never spooked an elk! He was laying right next to me watching the bull when he came in and I arrowed him.

Epic!

Impressive. I'll be the first to admit I'm severely lacking in my training, probably both style and frequency, but my dog probably wouldn't hold for a hotdog dangling in front of his face if there was an elk in bow range :ROFLMAO:

Also, it was a drop camp, so I had horses carry our food in, and elk out! We planned on 14 days, but next year for high country deer he will pack his own food and I think 7 days would be a breeze

I was very intentional in my training, we have only done obedience and steadiness training, now that I’m done archery hunting we will move to fetch phase.

This trip highlighted that I need to start working on birds, he couldn’t care less for the chukar, sharp tails, or blue grouse we ran into on the trip which probably helped the archery hunt, but still. I’ll have a lot of pheasant and waterfowl hunting lined up for him this fall and winter!

@Hoot That's awesome you have a dog so steady and obedient. I always wanted to take my lab on a big game hunt. He was just too wild in his youth. By the time he calmed down, he was too old to climb the mountain.
