I have been thinking of putting a spreadsheet together to show real world results of broadheads on game animals. This is a work in progress so let me know if there's any other data points to add. The spreadsheet contains the follow info so far...

  • Draw weight
  • Draw length
  • % Let off
  • Arrow Length
  • Total Arrow weight
  • Broadhead mfg
  • Broadhead model
  • Broadhead type (fixed, hybrid, expandable)
  • Broadhead weight
  • Animal shot/quarry
  • Shot Distance
  • Shot Impact (heart, lungs, guts, etc...)
  • Shot Angle (level, downhill, uphill)
  • Animal position (broadside, quartering to/away, frontal, TX heart shot)
  • Exit hole (Y/N)
  • Passthrough (Y/N)
  • Distance Traveled
  • Recovered (Y/N)
I have added an example on line 2, Please let me know your thoughts.

Or....you can shoot an efficient BH and get pass throughs on everything.....that makes for a boring chart....but impressive results.
I'm not a huge killer but I get pass throughs generally at 30" 70# with 3 or 4 blade heads with not great mech advantage. However, those pass throughs aren't always recoveries.. Blood trails are better though and obviously a pass through is preferred. Personally, I lean more and more towards larger cuts and accuracy all the time vs efficiency.

This year all I have slated for hunts are deer and maybe pronghorn. I'm thinking I'll probably tune fixed and just use a 2" mechanical.
