2025 Bird and Dog pics

We took him on a whim a couple years ago just because my son takes him everywhere with him. Completely on his own he went and fetched the first bird we shot.

Now it doesn’t make any difference if it’s dove or quail or pigeons, if you leave the house with a shotgun he’ll beat you to the truck every time. He’ll whine and cry and mope for 3 days if you leave him behind.

He’s a trooper, no problem putting in a couple miles. He’s also gotten to where he’s constantly scanning the sky looking for incoming birds. I ran him on a blood trail during deer season last fall and he did really well there too.
I would never have guessed when we went and picked up a squirrel sized pup a few years ago that he’d end up being a bird dog.

Both of our’s first sharptail and upland bird in general for that matter, though she didn’t really do much but at least she’s not gun shy and really interested in trying to find more. Work in progress but we’ll get there. Our new home in Montana is treating us well!

I don't know how to train a bird dog, but my German Shepherd loves running around off leash while I blast birds, and she does not bite the birds too hard when she catches an injured one.

@Jason Snyder I honestly didn’t really like the FF training at first, it took quite a bit of pressure. In hindsight, it seems like it has really helped Buck learn his place in the pack.
And that’s the beauty of it. It’s hard to put on the pressure at times, especially with a stubborn dog. It’s also easy to apply too much pressure for softer, more cooperative dogs. But in the end, as you see, you get a dog who is much more aligned with and willing to work FOR you.

Even a dog who is a strong natural retriever will benefit from force fetch. They are now retrieving because you told them to not because they want to, and it’s no longer optional.

More hunting practice...which is pretty much what I end up doing when actually hunting. Shotgun just kind of for show most of the time! :ROFLMAO:
