Dove season is his favorite time of year.

My father used to quail hunt with a dachshund, was great with singles. Did not like to retrieve. Was working with my gsp last year with frozen whole doves and my dachshund started retrieving them.

We took him on a whim a couple years ago just because my son takes him everywhere with him. Completely on his own he went and fetched the first bird we shot.

Now it doesn’t make any difference if it’s dove or quail or pigeons, if you leave the house with a shotgun he’ll beat you to the truck every time. He’ll whine and cry and mope for 3 days if you leave him behind.

He’s a trooper, no problem putting in a couple miles. He’s also gotten to where he’s constantly scanning the sky looking for incoming birds. I ran him on a blood trail during deer season last fall and he did really well there too.
I would never have guessed when we went and picked up a squirrel sized pup a few years ago that he’d end up being a bird dog.
