First bear. Was hunting sheep in the Brooks Range and came across the bear. 72 yard shot with 6.5 PRC did it’s job.

Rough measurements had him square at 8’1” and 23 1/4 skull.
I met you in fairbanks last week. Great bear.

I made a last minute decision to head to Idaho from Arkansas and made it happen after 4.5 hours of hunting. 60 hours of driving for a 4.5 hour hunt lol. It was worth it! My first bear.

That’s awesome! What did he square? Looks big. I guess you did a good job scouting.
Not sure what he squared at? When I took it to the taxidermist, all he said was that it was a big bear. Lol.

And no scouting, but this was my third year hunting that area. Usually I like to find a high point and glass with any hunting that I do… but I finally learned that bears are always on the move and spotting them from 1000 yards in thick oak brush and berry bushes didn’t do me any good. This year I picked a spot to sit where I’ve glassed up bears the last two years. I was there for a couple hours until he came in. It was an extreme boring two hours not picking apart everything with 15x binoculars like I’m used to doing… but it worked much better.

Found this guy munching berries, been wanting to take a good bear for awhile now. Having to pack it out myself over three trips made me rethink that idea going forward. Hopefully I get some interesting intel back from the collar! I had him in 350-400 LB range but not entirely sure, anyone more savvy have an estimate?

Congrats! That's a great bear. You seem to get it done every year. Please share the collar data when you get it back. Might be a problem Tahoe bear. Was the inside of its lip tattooed?

Thank you! No tattoo but I’ll have to double check. Certainly not impossible but I was pretty far south for it to be a Tahoe bear, more likely to be a mammoth bear. I’ve talked to the bio so hopefully he can expedite that info.

Mammoth bear would make sense too. I know NDOW tattoos the lip of captured bears in case an ear tag/collar is removed or destroyed. I took the year off from CA bear due to other hunts, but excited to see what it looks like next year.
