I took my 3 yr old out for his first hunt with dad yesterday, this little buck made himself too easy. I have another tag that will either be for a wall hanger or an ag land doe or tag soup.

My first mule deer trip with a buddy was successful. The miles were hard in the Nebraska hills but we both tagged out in only two days so not too bad. It was an amazing trip, can’t wait to get back there.

Hunting Nebraska public land with my Dad was going to be an epic journey regardless the outcome. With a declining population and extreme amount of hunting pressure I had almost zero expectations of finding a mature animal, let alone filling a tag this year. After a few hours of sleep we set out on the first morning trekking through the dark to a familiar glassing spot. As the darkness turned to a feint gray the adjacent ridge line became visible. I was able to spot a young buck cruising through a gap, then a few does. You can imagine my disbelief as this magnificent Mule Deer skylined himself briefly before first light. We sat there patiently for 30 minutes, diligently scanning for a second sighting, which never came. I realized that if we were going to see him again it was time to pursue. I closed in that 800 yards rather quickly only to catch up with him a half mile past where he initially was. A well placed shot under 250 yards reported back that a giant had fallen. Nebraska public land and the weather kicked our teeth in for the next several days as we searched for a second mature buck. With only 11 mule deer sighted the entire trip we decided to hang it up before the -25° windchill moved in. I’m extremely blessed to have great friends who introduced me to this beautiful country and will forever hold these elusive “Ghosts of the Sandhills” close to my heart. 8003BFE9-B62B-4998-A027-44BF0EB50B6D.JPEGEC28A547-3381-46CC-A6AC-E287A2E32EAC.JPEGFBCD5BCD-1331-40C6-BC1C-841B82FDF8DF.JPEG

Had a blast in a hunt of a lifetime this yr in Wy. 19 days straight but finally found the one I was looking for.
Do you have a measure of the inside spread on this buck? Trying to get a feeling for 20 inches as it’s a reg where I hunt. This is obviously a buck of a lifetime.
