First time elk hunting my buddy talked us on to western MT public unit using general tag. Got lucky and found a herd close to camp two days before season opened. Just us out there. Watched them work the same area for 48 hrs. Saturday rolls around and 18 trucks rolled in. Needless to say the herd pushed at first light.

Got lucky again that afternoon and spotted a pair of bulls a bit over a mile and made a move and took a shot. Lots of fun.

Many thanks to my buddy for deferring first shot and packing with me. A8D9AA35-8024-44CB-83E9-3A0BA5F8D48F.jpeg

Cool idea for a thread!
My 21 year old son got his first Elk last week. He was hunting with his mom and I hunted with his brother. Not a lot of kiddos get to shoot an Elk with their mother I don't think. DIY general tag on public. Liver & Onions was the first dish prepared.

First elk. 4.5 miles later stalked into about 150yards on 44 of them. A few bulls with mostly cows and calfs. Fun hunt just wish I had a bull tag. 20211102_144437.jpg20211102_172428.jpg

My daughter in law got her first elk 2 weeks ago. After several years of wanting a bull and not getting drawn she put in for cow elk. Shot it about 1.5 miles from the house about 3/4 way up a damn steep peak. It would have been easier to shoot one in the front yard but we don't shoot the yard elk.

LOL, congrats and that picture is a dream come true for me. Very cool neighbors!

I got my first elk last year. It was an amazing week full of close encounters that culminated with this bull on day seven. A fantastic experience that will be hard to top.
