DIY Solo on a draw tag. I wasn’t about to be picky with an empty freezer.

Seems like every little 5 point is from Colorado and every big bull is Wyoming or Montana. Small sample size but pretty crazy! Congrats to everyone! I haven’t had my turn in the barrel yet, but I’m excited!

I was looking for any elk the last weekend of the season in Wyoming and this guy came walking by.

I have a handful of Wyoming bulls from raghorn to 6x7 but none much bigger than this. I suppose that could change if I weren't just a weekend/evening hunter. But I'm pretty tickled to be able to wake up in my bed, drive 15 minutes, hike 2 miles and tag this bull by 8:30 AM.

Hey all, successful opening morning of the Montana 2021 elk season! I've killed three elk in the notorious "Middle Fork" of the Flathead River here in Northwest Montana. Helaciously brushy, steep, unforgiving country...with little game. But it's home and I love to hunt it. Opening morning dawned rainy and a miserable 39 degrees. We finally made it out of the truck at 10:00am and jumped this small bull about 1/4 mile from the rigs. I dropped him with a 190 yard shot, and some fellas parked at the trailhead came to help with the pack out. Could not have asked for a better opening day...drinking beers by 11:00am with a quartered out bull in the truck!

Second good bull of 2021. It has been an incredible year & I'm thankful for a full freezer & being able to share the blessings with several other folks. OTC, public land, DIY. A couple days later I was trying to fill a mule deer tag & took a nice bear coming in to the carcass. (It's over in the bear sub-forum).

Here's my DIY Colorado 2nd rifle bull. He broke off his G2 on his right side, but still pretty good thick mass. 370 yard shot with my 300 Weatherby Magnum. It was the 2nd to last day and we saw a bunch of elk throughout 5 days, but that was the only shot that I was presented with.elk3.jpgelk4.jpg

2nd season spike out in Eastern Oregon. First elk, couldn’t ask for a better trip with a few buddies. Shot him at 400 yards above the trail on our way in. Been on a few pretty brutal hunts/pack outs and this was by far the easiest. 4 guys, a spike and a nice downhill trail a mile back to the truck, can’t ask for much more than that!

My wifes first elk hunt with a tag in her pocket. 1st day on a bull we nicknamed the monster and stalked within 220 and setup shooting sticks but two hunters worked up a draw wind at back and busted him and his herd. Next day up at 3AM and back in our bowl well before sun and on a herd we knew had a five point and six point. Five point walked out first 15 after first light and she dropped him at 293 yards, made it ten feet. Good thing we did not wait for 6 point as the same hunters worked up same draw and when sun hits valley they would have winded this herd.

My son and I definitely need to work on the videography, but I wanted to share how I like to archery hunt for elk. Spot and stalk. Never let them know you're there and they never know what hit them.
