Hunted both Saturday and Sunday this last weekend and it'll probably be the last time I get out before the season ends this coming Sunday...I'm getting married this weekend and the soon to be bride won't let me go for one last hurrah lol.

Our season ended early a couple weeks ago. One of the downsides to drahts is they run too hard on retrieves(and any other time), jammed her foot on a rock going straight down a steep hill is all I can figure.

Great photos and recaps, guys. I love late fall/early winter bird hunting.

Ended my season on the 30th with a puddle duck hunt on big water. This is the third season for my dog and he has really come in to his own. Mid-morning I shot behind on a bird as it flared with the flock and caught the wind, hit it back in the body with pellets, and watched it sail way out before a crash landing 210 yards away on the far bank of the cove we were hunting. I was about to step out of the boat to walk around with the dog, but my buddy said, "I think he marked it." The dog was staring straight in that direction, so I gave him the command and he tore across the bay, 12-18" deep at the time. He got to the far shore and turned to me, I gave him a shouted, "Back!" and raised my left arm, wanting him to get on shore a few feet and(I hoped) into the scent cone of that bird. He spun off his right shoulder, and took a line up into the marsh grass. I watched through binos as he hit the scent, moved into the wind and straight to the duck.

I try not to brag myself up, but I'm not above bragging on my dog. That little swamp collie is still and quiet in the blind, steady to shot, has never refused a retrieve, and is one hard charging son of a bitch. We went in the season knowing we had to work on hand signals, especially in the water, and he has taken some big steps this year. This is my first bird dog and I know I've screwed him up in many ways, I'm just thankful he's naturally badass enough to overcome his handler.
