My 17 pulled the hell out of a 6000 lb + Vermeer 85 hp chipper on highway, back roads, and off road. Didn’t stop worth a dang. I regularly pull a heavy 15 Boston whaler cc about 250 miles each way to the outer banks also. No issues. That said get the 6’ bed!

I own a long bed 2017 Tacoma. The tranny sucks. Pulls like an old grandma. But she’s good if you live in a city or don’t need to tow anything big. And shes good in tighter off road situations.

I would never buy a Tacoma with an automatic. The only reason I don't have a Tundra is because they only come with an automatic.

GM is garbage. If your worried the Taco wont have enough balls get a Tundra
Tundra's are great for towing but they are big vehicles and suck off road on narrow trails. Taco's are nice small trucks but you can't get them in a diesel. Toyota dealers don't deal either. Jeeps are great off road but don't have a lot of room, suck at towing and are noisy on highways. A lot of Chevy's and Ford's aren't really made to go off road anymore. Their clearance in general sucks. The best hunting vehicle I ever owned was a Chevy Suburban but I wouldn't buy a new one for hunting.

No such thing as a perfect hunting truck. I try to figure out what I need a vehicle to do, what capabilities are a priority and buy something that can do that, at the lowest possible price. Personally, I could care less about brand and haven't experienced a big difference between them in terms of quality. If towing capability is important and you want a small truck, I would look at the Chevy Colorado in a diesel.

Since you're towing go full size with lockers. Towing is fine with a Tacoma seeing around it is another issue. Ram power wagons are nice. F150 has done a good job with selectable lockers and a 40 gallon fuel tank option. If the Tundra had lockers and a larger fuel tank I would own one of those but I do a lot of truck camping so bigger is better for me.....

My wifes Toyota 2019 last November was almost 49k I paid tax on 41,500. So yea they will deal.
What you wont see is bloated msrps like you see on GM's so the can knock 10k off the sticker price of truck that would never sell at that price any way.

I look a fleet of Gm Diesel trucks daily, we cant say in with the budget for the repairs. I wouldnt buy one with someone else money.

Get yourself a 98 chevy Silverado regular cab with a 350 for pulling your boat. Then get yourself an 01 honda civic coupe for daily driver.

Explanation: Old truck will pull the boat fine and is reliable and you can wrench it yourself. The civic will get great gas mileage and get you from point A to point B and will be easy to work on as well. The added benefit is when you go on a big trip with your buddies no one will want to ride in your reg cab or crunch up in a tiny civic. You pay for gas/food and drive their rig.

The benefits: you save 4000/year in depreciation. Another 2000-2500 in fuel. Insurance and registration will be a wash...2 liability only rigs vs 1 full coverage. Take that 6500/year and stick it in an IRA and retire a few years early or use it to cover tag applications and hunt costs plus a healthy gear budget!

I pulled a covered trailer with my 06 Tacoma a couple times. At 65mph, safe speed, the RPM's were too low to make any power, so I just ended up driving 80mph praying a deer didn't run out front. Pulled great that fast.

Not interested. I have an 04 Sierra. Payed off but I keep shoving money at it to keep it on the road. Would rather be shoving money and have something nice.

I’ve seen a guy pulling a Ranger 620 deep v with a taco, I wouldn’t want to do that long distance or in the mountains but it wasn’t an issue for him in Wisconsin.

Had a 2017 Tacoma and just got rid of it. My only complaint was how it drived at highway speeds or towing anything. Just didn’t have the power. Constantly searching for a gear. Traded it for a 19 ranger and couldn’t be happier. I can cruise at 75 mph and stay just at 2k rpms. Doesn’t search around for gears. Threw 1000lbs of corn in the back last week didn’t change anything. Couldn’t be happier.
