2019 CA X4 Blacktail

My 2019 X4 Blacktail and a bear I saw on the first day of that hunt. Overall disappointed with the quality of X4 as I expected to see more deer. Had a successful vegan hunt too . Nice heavy 3x4 with 3” eye guards. Very happy with him and he is delicious!

Nice Buck! X4 has a lot of deer but its a mostly timbered area and not a lot of places away from roads.

Per B&C or P&Y yes, they are mule deer. But, even in our X zones bucks seem to have more blacktail genetics than mule deer. Either way it’s a great CA buck. Congrats

My dad and I hunted X4 and both harvested bucks..his in the eastern portion of the zone and mine in the western portion..his buck outweighed mine by 50 lbs easily..definitely some "mule tail" cross in mine! We didn't see many deer this year, but both got 23" bucks.. His was a 3x3 and mine was a 4x3. Only legal bucks we saw during season. Nice buck you got OP!

Buck was taken in the western part of the unit down low in elevation. A mile away there were rocky mountain mule deer does and probably bucks nearby that we never saw. But mine was more blacktail by a long shot - rump was not white at all. Ill have to dig up the trail cam videos i have of him in velvet. Never saw his big brother!! Doubt Ill put in for x4 again as it was not great hunting tbh. Thanks again everyone!

Pretty sure I know where you were hunting..this was not a good year for seeing numbers of deer. I live in the unit and get a lot of scouting time. The weather wasn't very cooperative either.

I bet you do know where. That glassing pic may give it away. No one hunted that spot with us the last week of the season. Weather was hot and horrible until the day I got the buck. Rained that night. If you bear hunt, let me know. I wont be back for that brute there since I live so far away. Saw him once scouting and once hunting. Almost had a shot. Hes could go B&C, hes that big. Probably not the best eating but you never know til you try him.

I grew up in that town. That particular spot you were hunting has always been a low density of deer. Great quail hunting though. Nice buck, congrats!
