Glad you guys are back on board... This is gonna suck having to watch this unfold without being there. I'm there in spirit.

I must explain why I'm not in the high country right now. I don't want everyone to think I'm a pussy. I'm actually an idiot for thinking I'd be able to make this trip. My wife had heart surgery a few weeks ago and developed blood clots.... She is on schedule for a slow recovery and I need to be home right now. This ranks at the top of the scale for bailing on two of my good friends. It's all good... Doug and Bret will have a great trip and I'll be hunting elk in Az in a month... Good luck guys. Ed F

So we got to base camp after the 3 hour horse ride. We set the tent up but not much more.

We packed our packs and started for the first spike camp. It took me 2.5 hours. I am beat up and tired in my current state.

We glassed a little that evening and saw two small bucks.

I had a rough night to put it mildly. I could eat dinner and was exhausted.

Opening morning cam the firs basin was a big zero for activity.

We decided to head to our next base camp.

A 2 hour scramble and we were there. Best part, snow about 50 yards away. So I can't drink as much as I want to help my stones.

So we set up camp, got some water and went to glassing. Within about the first hour two really goods bucks were located.

Bret figured out a plan and went after them. About 15 minutes into the stalk the deer bugged out. It wasn't from Bret. Could have been the lightning and rain pounding us.

Day 2 tomorrow .

Ed, good move staying home- not only is it the right thing to do, but you'd likely have been miserable feeling guilty for going when you shouldn't have. I hope your bride heals up and feels better ASAP.
