2014 enlightened equipment Enigma 20* extra long/wide

It was below freezing most days so it was by far my driest trip to Kodiak so the quilt held up just fine, but I don't feel it was a good test as to how it'd handle true wet weather like on POW (I was on Kodiak).

HAHA I'm taking a standard EE Rev X with regular 850 this week.

POW is a wet SOB. The problem really is when it is wet and not blowing much the humidity is through the roof and in a single wall tipi condensation is on EVERYTHING and nothing really dries out. Had I been in a double wall tent on that trip my down bag wouldn't have lost its loft nearly as fast I think. But at that poitn you could argue that a Tipi and syn bag is as light or lighter than a down bag and a double wall...oh the conundrums. How did the guys 100 years ago ever survive these horrible problems. :D

Luke - Thanks. This was the post that led me to think your trip was to POW. Please post up any good/bad/indifferent experiences you have with the quilt. I'm trying to gather info.

Yeah i was referring to Nick's experience on POW and agreeing with him that POW is wet wet wet!

I have owned my EE quilts for a little over a year now and have nothing but good things to say about them. At some points I'd like to upgrade to the Enigma as I think its a superior design to the RevX but the pricing reflects that too, but worth the upgrade for me atleast.

I find the flexibility of the zippered foot box in the Revelation attractive. What aspects of the Enigma are you thinking you prefer?

Vertical baffles and lighter weight mainly. But everyone has their own desires and I am far from disapointed with the RevX and it may be a bit before I upgrade.

Pretty sure all of the Revelation Quilts are vertical baffles now, Enigma is only $20 or so more expensive and 2oz lighter even in the largest size. I have no real experience with quilts, so I'm looking for input from others. I picked up one from the classifieds and like it, but haven't been able to put it through the paces yet. I'm thinking about giving it to my wife and ordering a longer one for myself. Didn't know if I was missing something. I think littlebuf is running an Enigma too.

Used it up North a few weeks ago when it wasn't real cold. I was happy with the way it performed even though it's a little short for me, but I've gotta get some more extensive time in it. I'll be using any possible excuse to sleep in it. I'm thinking that I want to go with a quilt this fall. I'll probably be in the backyard this weekend with the kids.

Sleep in your back yard a night or two :)

No excuses!

That's what I do (14 degrees last night) sometimes right on the front porch in case the little kid wakes up...we are tucked back away from the neighbors and anyone that notices just thinks my wife was pissed off at me...and so it goes

Ha! "Wonder what he did this time?"

I know you are testing a 20, but if you were expecting single digit nights would you have any reservations about getting one of the EE 0 degree quilts?

I have no reservations about any of Tims quilts. If a zeros what you would need it would do the job. I don't need that low of rating to get into the single digit temps. I can take the 20* there with a base layer and my puffy pretty easy. Did it with the rev X and have no reason to believe the enigma won't perform the same. I sleep warm however.

Yeah, it is totally a personal preference thing but I used a 30* quilt last winter wearing merino base layers and some socks. Granted, this was just a short test of a couple hours but the temps were down into the 20's and I was toasty. Also, I am a warm sleeper by nature so that plays into it as well. So, if you are a cold sleeper or don't like sleeping in clothes, perhaps a 0* quilt will better suit you.

I'm a cold sleeper. Don't mind sleeping in clothes. Avg night temp for where and when I plan to go is in the 20's with frequent dips into single digits.

going to write up a quick summery of my thoughts on this quilts performance this year to wrap up this thread. any questions you have you can go a head and pm me and ill answer you that way. im done posting on this web site and the only reason im finishing up this thread is because of how much i believe in this product and what a great guy Tim is .

spent several nights in this quilt this year in many different conditions. ive gone over before how warm EE's quilts are and this one is no exception. in fact its warmer than my 20* revelation. this is most likely attributed to the different cut/configuration of the enigma, but also i believe to the redesigned baffles. my rev x is an older model with the square baffles. the new designed baffles work amazingly well at keeping the down in its place and there wasn't a cold spot any where in this quilt. very nicely done. the cut is also very well thought out, as state in the title mine is a wide. im a pretty big guy at 6'5" 230 with fairly broad shoulders. im also a touch claustrophobic (Justin and Brock can attest) this quilt wraps you snugly helping hold warmth while at the same time feeling plenty roomy for a restless sleeper like my self. pretty impressive feat really. it is not as roomy as my revelation but at the same time doesn't feel more restrictive. very pleased here. the one criticism i could give this quilt is it is harder to regulate to a cooler temperature than my revelation is. warm is certainly not a problem and i could cool down when needed it just took a little longer. for you cold sleepers this is a major plus, for us hot sleepers its not that big of a deal and had i not spent so much time in my revelation the though probably would have never crossed my mind.

the treated down really is pretty amazing. time will tell on longevity of the treatment but as to its performance thus far its as advertized. ive never been one of the guys that worries about down getting wet, ive gotten regular down wet, really wet, ive crawled into regular down bags soaked, really soaked, and never died. in fact slept quit warm and woke up dry. that being said it does lose loft when wet. this year i had several opportunity to get this quilt wet/ most of the time not too bad and being by myself nothing really to compare it to. it preformed well, kept me warm, kept loft and stayed dry. the last trip i went on with Brock however i got to see it side by side with a 2014 revelation with standard down. Brock and i camped by a lake in late September bear hunting. hiked around 10 miles in and if i remember right it was raining about the whole time. got to camp around 11pm and set up in wet gear. both our tent condensate d heavily in the night and the slope we camped on had us slide down with our feet up against the tent wall. when we woke up the foot boxes of both our quilts were absolutely soaked. Brocks was collapsed and wet pretty much through, still kept him warm but it sure was wet. mine was soaked on the outside of my quilt but wit water beaded up and i would say near zero loss of loft. quit the difference, and made me a believer.

in summery im very happy with the enigma and very happy with the treated down. i consider both an upgrade in my sleep system with a weight savings to boot. i will say however im not going to be giving u[ my revelation, that is a great quilt and if i had to have only one it would be a revelation with treated down and the new style baffles. i really dont think that could be beat for performance and versatility by any other bag/quilt out there. if your at all on the fence about EE or treated down, come on down off the fence and buy one.

Too many people for littlebuf. He doesn't even like it when the three of us go hunting together. (Too crowded for him) Remember what he said about his claustrophobia .
