2013 40-Mile closure

I read the trooper dispatches the other day and noted that there were a lot if cows taken by 40 mile hunters with bull permits. That's not helping. Just like all the sublegal moose in 13.

I agree Ray!
It's just not that difficult to differentiate caribou sex. But then, some "hunters" don't even know what GMU they are in.

Now this is interesting....

Back to the original subject. It looks like the 40 Mile herd is expanding it's range north of the Yukon this week.

Sounds like they were getting harvested by locals, which is probably going to make the winter hunt even less likely.

They started expanding east into their historic range in the White Mountains a few years ago. This kind of behavior is a positive in my mind. Usually means the herd is growing.

Hey YK, just got back from a cow moose hunt down around Japan Hills....saw a ton of bou and was well with in bow range of several. Do you know if these are 40 mile bou? 20A, zone 5.

The 40 Mile Herd has migrated North of Dawson City and Yukon F&G is in process of closing caribou hunting in that area as the Porcupine Herd migrates into that area also. Messy!

Yeah, read that the other day...wasn't sure how far south the 40M herd ranged.

Snipershirt,

Those caribou are part of the Delta Caribou Herd. They range along the north slope of the AK Range basically from Delta almost to Healy. It's a permit hunt (RC827). As I recall, the odds of drawing aren't too bad, probably because it's considered a fly-in hunt by most.

As VernAK said, the main 40 Mile herd is way northeast of us right now.

Got it, thanks for the info!

Most of the 40 Mile Caribou Herd is still in YT and has split up with one group moving NE of Dawson City in the Dempster Highway area while another faction is traveling SE and has crossed the White River near the juncture with the Yukon River.

Both ADF&G and YT are monitoring progress.

I sure hope they eventually return home.
