20” 6.5 PRC w/ No Brake

For those with a shorty 6.5 PRC, just curious how the muzzle blast is without a brake or suppressor on it (bare muzzle). Would it be similar to a 20” 308 or louder due to the increased velocity?

I've wondered how it would be with a brake as well as without. I'm liking all the short handy rifles for hunting, but not in the market for a suppressor right now.

Interested to hear responses.

I have a 22 and a 20. There is some blast, my humble opion it is less than a 308. I have shot them with a brake and it is fairly loud. I have also shot them suppressed the best way to go.

Not an exact comparison, but I took 3 shots at 2 antelope within a couple seconds this year with a 20” 300wsm bare muzzle. That’s the only time my ears have ever rang after shooting. It went away after 5-10 minutes but still i would not recommend.

(I never intended to shoot this rifle unsuppressed, but the tag came before the suppressor was approved)

I feel it’s dependent on powder used and volume of powder.
The 20” barrels I’ve shot were loud, and the 18” were horrid with 308 powder volume cases (45-ish grains). 223 volume cases (25-30-ish grains) are ok at those lengths.
6.5 prc is 55-ish grains…
For me that would be a no go below 22” unless suppressed.

I have an 18 inch with an APA little bastard on it but I haven't shot bare muzzle. I can tell you that you want to be shooting the rifle or behind the shooter because its brutal anywhere else... Every rifle is that way with the APA Brakes though.

Yes the APA makes a huge difference for reducing recoil and muzzle rise. I would recommend going with the Gen 3 and just pulling all of the top set screws. Only downfall is you do HAVE TO wear ear plugs when you are in the field otherwise you wont hear for weeks. I speak from experience lol.

I shot my 18” 6.5 PRC once without a can just to show someone how ungodly loud it is and I will not do it again until I have to show someone else. For whatever reason be it pressure or powder to bore the short mags are loud with a much sharper crack than something like a 30-06.

I run exclusively suppressed now but I would absolutely wear hearing protection in the woods just like when I hunted with my unsuppressed .300 Win Mag.

The first time I shot my 18in barrel the wife who was 20 yards behind me commented on how loud it was. Can't imagine shooting it without ear pro.
Have a suppressor on it now that makes it so much better.

APA brakes are among the highest recoil reduction of anyone. There are youtube test of lots of different brakes and several people have written about it on their blogs.
