20” 28 nosler

Anyone put together a 20” barrel 28 nosler? Thinkin about doing one to run suppressed
You're not likely to find anyone with 20'' 28 Nosler experience. Don't let it deter you if you want a short 7mm with as much speed as possible, just be aware that many suppressors wont handle a 28 Nosler at that barrel length.
Seems like a poor choice for a short bbl.
It's an excellent choice if you want the most speed possible at a given barrel length. A 20'' 28 Nosler with 195's will be faster than a 30'' 7-08 with 140's and everyone always talks about how great the 7-08 is.

Like posted at bottom. Would like to get the most out of the 7 without packing a meter of barrel and suppressor. Suppressor is 7” long so wanting to stay as short as possible. Was planning to do a 7mm Sherman max first but this idea rolled through my head

For reference, I shoot with a guy that has a 21'' 7/300 Norma suppressed. It'll send a 195 at 3000 FPS, a 20'' 28 Nosler would probably end up at 2900 +/- after the barrel is broken in. Double check your suppressor's rating before you commit to a big short barreled magnum.

Just be ready for that can to get hot!! I have a 7.5" on a 24" 7mag. But I just cut the barrel to 20" because I got tired of carrying around Kentucky long rifle!!
I've always wanted a 28 nosler and just wish I could get a barrel chambered in it for my Blaser R8

I say go for it, you'll be faster than a 26" 280 ai without a doubt.
Do a Google search you'll see there's a few guys running 16" pistols in 28 nos with good results.
If you're okay with a little less velocity look into a custom throated 7wsm.
I ordered a 7-300wsm improved reamer and should have my 18" tikka prefit back in the next few weeks.
I'll post my load data

Minimum Barrel Length (straight from thunderbeast website) Obviously check with the maker of your suppressor first
6".300 Blackout (subsonic)
8".300 Blackout (full power)
10"6.8 SPC, 7.62x39
11.5"223 Rem, 5.56, 6.5 Grendel
14.5".308 Win, .260 REM, 6.5 Creedmoor, .243 WIN, .22 Creedmoor
16"6.5 SAUM, 6.5 PRC, 7 WSM, 7 SAUM, 7STW, 7RM, 300 WSM
18"26 Nosler, 28 Nosler, 300 WM, 300 WBY, 6.5-300WBY
22"7 RUM, 300 Norma, 300 RUM, 300 PRC

Sounds awesome. Do it and report back. Getting ready to chop my 7mm RM down to 20" for the same reason. It will be running an ultra 5 when hunting.

Gotta wonder what logic they used for that when a 300 PRC needs 22" but a 26 nosler is good with 18" and a 7STW is good with 16"? A smaller case in a 308 bore needs more barrel length than bigger cases in a 264 and 284?

I would be concerned about getting full powder burn to keep the ES and SDs down. May have to experiment with different powders and bullets to find the right combo.

Let us know how it goes. Interested, as I have a 24" 28 nosler with TBAC ultra 5 and like to keep things short as possible on hunting guns.

If you guys missed the New 2022 Rifles thread, browning is releasing an 18” 28 Nosler. I’d have no qualms about a 20” at all. I’d like to have my 6.5 PRC chopped to 18-20” to run suppressed.

Go for it, and share your results.

@wind gypsy don’t the 26 Nosler and 7STW both have slightly less case capacity than 300PRC?

I'd have to do some research on how they all measure out but you're right they are all probably within a couple grains of each other.

STW is probably about the same as a 300 PRC. The PRC will get more of that volume from inside the case neck. My logic on the nosler was that the 30 nosler is bigger than the PRC and the 26 Nosler has a bigger case than the 30 nosler (shoulder further forward) but might lose measurable capacity just due to volume in the smaller diameter neck. What some call "usable capacity" would be greater than the PRC.

I have a few buddies who have built 28 nosler xp-100 pistols with 17-18" barrels. Never had a 28 nosler my self. Have had several 7mm Dakotas with 17-18" barrels. Got about 2800fps with 195s

And that 7-08 barrel will last 25x longer than that 20" 28Nos lol
