This year I turned 58 and this will be my 1st time giving elk a go without a guide. I've done 3 guided elk trips in Montana to learn, with 1 of them successful. This year I put in for an anterless tag in NW Colorado ( 4-441-214) and drew one for 2nd rifle. I've always wanted to do a backcountry camp hunt on my own so now it's happening. After years of tuning my gear, learning and reading on here, this seems to be the last "baby step", with an anterless tag, before going for a bull on my own. I plan on being out there the closed week before 2nd rifle, scouting, glassing, learning, enjoying. I got this hunt because a friend called me one day and he had booked a drive up camp unguided hunt in that area and invited me to join. Perfect time for me to set out on my "own" and have a back up camp or friend if needed, also a pack outter (camp outfitter) if needed. If anyone would pm me about that area, any and all suggestions, tips would be greatly apprecaited. I put in for a deer tag as well but didn't draw. I know that area was hit hard by a bad winter kill a few years back. Really looking forward to this, it's been YEARS in the making for me personally..never too late....
