I was thinking of trying out some 199g hammer hunters for a hunt this year, I have h4831 but I don’t have any h1000.

Has anybody used the 199g hammer hunter out of their 300 win mag? I’m interested in recipes and performance on game.

Thanks!!!

I have a bunch of data with 199hh and 300wm but my rifle had custom reamer designed for 215 bergers.

Do you have enough twist for 199's? Do you have sammi chamber? If you have a sammi chamber you will not gain anything but recoil over 181s.

The petals are big enough on the 199s that I had 5 exit holes on a buck shot at 200yrds. With monos lighter and faster usually wins.

The barrel is a 1-10” factory barrel. It’s a Kimber mountain ascent. I’m looking to try something a bit different than my normal 200g partition load.

I test loaded a few 199s in my 1-10 twist 300 rum....they hit the target damn near sideways. On the other hand the 196s made for a 1-10 twist have shot great. The 181s have also shot great in 1-10

199s will be way too long. 180 power hammer is about the heaviest you will get away with your twist

Yeah, no chance on stabilizing the 199's like stated above. I believe they make a 30cal 180gr. hammer that works in a 10 twist. But the BC will be total garbage if you're wanting to shoot far. Decent ranges it would be a good option.

What twist is needed to stabilize those 200 gr bullets?
Length is more the issue than the weight. Use the jbm stability calculator and try to stay above 1.5, not only for stability in the air, but to maintain a nose forward orientation inside the animal so the bullet functions correctly.

Interesting, thanks everybody. Glad I asked before buying.
The 199 sledge hammers should work. I ran them in my 1-10 300wm behind rl23 with good results. Recently went down to the 180s to gain some velocity for some open country deer hunts. I’d be curious what those 199 sledges did on a moose at sub 500. I’d bet you’d be happy with the results

I’ve used the sledges before in my 30-06, they did shoot well. Maybe I’ll try some in the 300.

I used the 196 Hammer Hunter in 300 Win Mag for moose…1:10 twist. Steve recommended it. I was pleased with the performance… used RL 26 per Steve’s recommendation. Give Steve a call… see what he recommends.

I also have used the 196 hammer hunters out of my 300winmag on bear and moose and was really impressed both times. Loading it over h1000.

Aren’t length and weight directly correlated? Can’t make the bullets any larger in diameter so the only option is to add length.

That's true with bullets of same/similar construction, an all copper bullet can be much longer than a lead bullet of the same weight.IMG_20230315_061948317.jpg
