My go to deer rifle is a Ruger American Ranch with a 2-7x33 Redfield in 7.62x39. It’s taken many deer 🦌 over the years I’ve used it. I take it to 350yds of steel pretty regularly and with the right bullet would be tempted on whitetail. Probably won’t try but tempting.

I've got the RaR in 5.56 but thinking about that new Gen 2 RaR in .308. My fear is that muzzle blast is going to be like the test scene from "Oppenheimer".

Which means....I'll probably do it and report back here next season....LOL

I have been using a m600 in .308w and the muzzle blast is substantial. But is light, quick pointing, effective.
Pick your evils.

Get a suppressor and don’t look back. My last approval took less than 48 hours. Find a gun store with one of the SilencerCo kiosks. Easy peazy.

I would go .223/5.56. I’ve had pretty good luck with my 14.5” in the last year or two. Mostly shooting within 100 yards and using 70gr TSX and 77gr SMK. Wanna give some 62Gr T-TSX a try this year.

I shoot a 6.5 grendel with a 11.5" barrel, it is a fantastic tree stand gun. It is a little heavier than I anticipated, but it is nothing like the Steyr 300 win. with a 56 objective.

The Ruger American Gen 2 ranch rifle seems like it was made exactly for what you want. 16 inch barrel, already threaded, very accurate, lots of aftermarket support, just pick your flavor. If it were me (which it probably will be in the next year or so) I would go either 6.5 Grendel or 6 Arc. 300 blk would obviously suppress the best but I think you would find it wanting beyond 200 yds. I could be wrong though as the three deer I’ve shot with my 300 blk were all 150 and in. As for the other short action cartridges, I don’t think you’re really going to see much difference from your 308 under 300 yards. Maybe that’s a good thing, maybe it’s not what you want, but I personally see more appeal in a smaller cartridge for this situation.

If hunting public land where straight wall cartridges are required, then consider the 350 Legend. If not, then may as well stick with 6.5CM, 7mm08 or .308.

I have 2 ARs built for just that. My daughter has a 300 Blk i built for her. And I also just finished a 350 Legend build ill probably use for a short brush gun.
Havent got to shoot the 350L yet as I had to order a Mag for it as the 350L takes a different Mag.

Rossi R92 44 magnum 16” shooting a 225 bullet 1650 fps. Still new to me though, putting a red dot on shortly to see if can improve my accuracy
Which model? I’ve been wanting one of these for a close quarters blizzard gun.

I have the stainless model. I like it now but it took a little tinkering to get it cycling the ammo i wanted to use
