So I hunted with a Howa mini this year in 6mm ARC, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Now it's got me wanting to make some changes to lighten it up, and shorten the barrel. I am considering running a 16" barrel. I want to try the 95 TMK, and I will keep the 105 Mid South Tipped as a backup option.

I have always leaned towards Temp stable powders for that extra security against velocity swings. I have been using Varget in my 20" ARC. With the velocity loss of going to a 16" barrel, Varget will still get me to my desired range with the 95 TMK. However, I have been wondering about trying some of the not as temp stable powders like TAC, LVR, etc. for the extra velocity if I run into availability issues with the 95 TMK and need to switch back to the 105 grain bullet.

If this is going to be primarily just a hunting rifle for October. (This years temps were a little warm, but still lower 60's). Do I really need a temp stable powder?

I will practice with it throughout the year, but most of my practice is early spring, early fall, and some morning and evening summers. During the summer months the temps will definately be closer to the high 80's, but I don't plan on running a temp sensative powder at the ragged edge.

What are your guys thoughts?

I've done almost exactly what you're attempting (LVR out of a 16" bolt gun) and have run it in 50s through the 80s/90s. The warmer days definitely showed more pressure signs, but nothing too outrageous. I ended up shooting my biggest buck antelope ever with my 103 ELD-X/LVR handload in late October and it performed without a hiccup. I think you're ok with your thought process, but just don't shoot in extreme temps of June-August, and it should perform the same in October-November.

Now, to throw a grenade in your lap, I've also toyed with the idea of staying with Varget and the 103, because I was able to get 2600-2650 fps with repeatability, and it matches the BDC of the factory ammo out to 400yds. But if you're going that route, you might as well just buy factory ammo.
