I know there’s lots of info out there. This is all about confidence and availability.

Killed my first elk with Winchester 180 grain Accubond CT in 300 WSM. Having a hard time finding the same round and 300 WSM in general. Like the caliber a lot, but not the most accurate rifle (Winchester XPR).

I have a .308 Browning x-bolt that shoots MOA with Factory Federal Premium 150 grain Nosler Partitions. Just need reassurance that it’s enough. Very confident with that round and rifle within 400 yds.

What do you fart smellers think?

The Nosler Partition is a very effective bullet for the distance of 400 yards or less. The 150 grain is extremely effective on medium size game but you may want to consider 180 grain (if you can find it). You would get more kinetic energy, better penetration, and increase the likelihood of having exit wounds to produce solid blood trails.

But, if you're shooting 1MOA with 150s, so long as you practice and plan on taking broadside, double lung chest shots you're probably good to go.

Guys on here whacking elk with 223. Partition has killed more animals than most bullets around and speed is worth more than mass.... I’d go for it.

Pretty much. 150 partition or acubond will be fine. Shoot em dead and do not make a bad shot. They’ll never know the diff.

Proofs in the pudding. 308 with 150 grain barnes factory Vor Tx ammo at 200 yards, took 2 shots but I think one would have done it (shoot till they stop moving is what I heard)

I’ve used 165 grain accubonds in a 30-06 with great success on elk - both bulls and cows. Farthest distance has been 275

I looked at velocities for 150 grain 308. Looks to be about the same as a 30-06 with 165’s. I doubt 15 grains at the same speed would make too significant of a difference….

Like what others have said and I’m sure you already know, hit them in the right spot and they’re dead

Thanks for all of the feedback!

I just got in two boxes of the 150 grain Federal Premium NPs for the .308 for the cost of one box of 300 WSM in the specific flavor mentioned. Will be more economical at least and I have more rounds for practice now.

Like I said, it shoots lights out and I'm very confident with that rifle. Killed several white tails with it and my antelope doe in 2020 in WY.

I may flake out and take the WSM depending on where I get drawn.

I believe 150s are enough in .308. I use 130s for elk in .270 and have seen no need to go heavier.

If 150s don’t do it cleanly, it will probably be shooter error and not bullet performance.

A friend took out a nice 6x6 two years ago with a 150g .308 at 525y. I don't see that round having any problems under 750y maybe even more.

I shoot a lot of 130g 6.5x284 and never had an issue.

One shot kill with a 168 grn nosler partition out of a .308 this past fall. Distance was only 95 yards but it dropped him in his tracks. I would use it again.

Did you get a chance to try other loads in the XPR? My 300 WSM XPR loves everything Federal, is good with Remington, and really didn't like the Hornady or Win loads. This is probably not at all helpful with the current ammo environment but I'm curious about your experience. I love the 300 WSM for elk.
