13 year old broken arm in cast. Any tips?

Kid fractured his elbow last week. Full arm cast. Going with on my brother's archery elk hunt in easy terrain. We will be 8 days of truck camping with a good setup. Any watch outs or tips for dealing with this on a SEPT hunt?

Yeah I wouldn't push it. I broke my arm skiing and would hike for a few hours on the weekend while I was healing. Even after a few hours, my arm was so swollen and throbbing that it would take almost the entire day to get back to normal. That was after 2-4 hours. I can't even imagine how uncomfortable I would be after eight-straight days, off trail. He's got plenty of good hunting years left.

I agree.

If he was an adult and made the decision to go I'd think "ok, whatever, dude." but a kid can't understand what's at stake to make a good decision especially with FOMO.

we are very mobile. We have been on DIY elk 10+ years. Doctors gave the OK.
Mainly worried about him itching it and sweating during daytime. Already bought a small bucket crapper for at camp for convenience!

Will be in spacious roof top tent. We will be playing it very slow anyways. its on the easy end of topography. no mountains. Its only my brothers tag so we can hang back if needed.

Sounds like a fun trip.

Have him sleep on the floor now with whatever kind of sleeping pad/cot/bag you’ll be using on the hunt for a few nights. If he has problems sleeping you’ll know it right away. If he can’t sleep at home no way he will do any better somewhere else. It’s human nature for boys to not be careful with a new break when it isn’t hurting. I’ve refractured a bone after a few weeks because I was going to be tough and lift something I shouldn't have. He’s got to start using good judgement sometime - sounds like a good trip for him to practice taking care of himself. Have him look up what to watch out for and list out his limitations for the trip.

Personally I’d take a Tylenol before bed if I needed it or not - helps with normal aches as well as any minor itching the cast might cause. I’m a little disappointed in my parents and the medical community that not a single one of them mentioned pain meds help with itching or restless legs that can’t get comfortable.
