10 days to decide

Well the time is getting near, I have to decide what next fall will look like.

I have four points in Wyoming and have been agonizing over whether to spend them on a general tag this season. When I started buying them, it seemed that at five points I would have my pick of plenty of hunts. Now, five points doesn't seem to get any more than three would have a few years ago.

One limited area has held my attention for some time. Others that are attainable, have barely gotten a glance. But limited access points and many tags allotted make me leery of a $1000 investment.

I have no concrete hunting plans for the fall yet. Drawing a Wyoming tag would change that, every other possibility would take a back seat. Elk is my top hunting priority and I don't have many points elsewhere but it feels like a major decision to commit.

I'll probably have a tall glass of bourbon next Wednesday and make the decision...

Who else is riding the line of indecision?

No indecision on my part at age 63. I want to hunt elk as often as I can since I'm not sure how many seasons I have left to hunt in the mountains - the way I like to hunt, anyway. We only had 1 point for Wyoming this year (I've hunted there four times beginning in 2010) and, as such, only have a 14% chance to draw a General Tag for 2019. So, I've been researching Montana and we'll apply there if unsuccessful in Wyoming. I spoke with the Montana F&G staff and last year all NR with one preference point were successful in drawing a tag. You can purchase this PP when you apply and it increases your odds for the season in which you apply (plus future years if unsuccessful). I'm not in your situation with four points and the potential to hunt in a limited draw area, but I would encourage you to take full advantage of any opportunity to hunt. Hope this helps.

I also have 4 points in wyoming and plan to just go general tag as I didnt see any LE that I could be assured of drawing and that I liked better.
My dilemma is which area to hunt. I have spent so much time researching but still dont know for sure. Leaning toward south central portion of the state but everything I read says those units get hit really hard. Hoping they aren't too bad during September archery but we will see. I am not set up for bivy hunting so a truck camp with my cheap walmart gear and some miles on the legs will have to be enough. This is my first archery elk hunt at 46 years old so I have no idea what to expect.

No indecision on my part. I have zero points and am just starting my elk odyssey. I’m applying for limited draw tags in 5 states this year. If I don’t luck out in the random draw, I’ll collect my bonus/preference points and go Colorado OTC. I’ll probably keep doing this year after year. I just want to hunt.

I have 4 as well. But I can't see blowing them on a Gen tag. But make no mistske, I fretted the decision but I have a plan and am riding it out.

With the way point creep is going in Wyoming the odds are getting worse that you'll ever catch up with your unit if you aren't at max. The general tag in Wyoming isn't a waste of 4 points, hell, it's better than a lot of LE tags in other states.

Yep but only with 4 points. I am probably going to put in for long shot odds and roll into next year for the general with 5.

With zero points anywhere, all my applications are long shot odds. I’m picking great units that offer random tags and hoping for the best. I fully expect to only gain points this year. I just haven’t decided if an OTC Colorado hunt or a Montana general tag is the best option to get me into the woods when the tag draws fail me.

Even the MT general isn't a guarantee anymore

I'm at 6 points and for 3 years I've been one point behind my unit.I put in for type 6 so hopefully I can hunt it without buying points and see if it's worth another year or two wait. Not going to bail on a general tag though.Ive been researching a handful of units I can draw or can within a year or two.Think price increases last year and points increase will help getting some to jump ship and forget their plan.I didn't even apply for type 1 or 2 tag this year
Hoping to score again in NM or get super lucky in Arizona.Ive had the Montana combo in the past and that's a great tag as well

I held off on the general and applied for a type 9. Hopefully one of the random tags falls my way.

I'll have two or three elk hunts whether or not I draw in Wyoming, so it's not really a matter of opportunity to me. Mostly, I'm looking for a higher quality experience.

I have no skin in the game as far as points anywhere except a MT preference point from last year and I’ll buy another when applying to ensure I draw the general tag. Honestly with everything I’ve found with the current state of accruing points and point creep, points are basically just going to be for general tags in Wyoming and MT for me, or someone like me that’s behind the 8 ball on the point creep. I’ll hunt Idaho, CO, or Oregon as an OTC at some point probably. New Mexico will be my lucky shot in the dark every year in hopes of hunting a good unit.

Points are a Ponzi scheme. I think the rule of unintended consequences is pretty apparent in the way the points game has worked out.
