Finished 7 days. Thanks for the inspiration. I think I will make this part of my summer practice. I plan to shoot a ton but I might take days in between and do cold bow 1 arrow.

Laid my bow down for four days then fired one arrow. It's out of my group and why I really try to shoot an arrow or two in camp during the hunt.

I finally got my post updated w/ all 7 shots. Biggest thing I think I learned is....focus on that 1 single spot. I think every-time I hit right I was just aiming mid-body and firing away. While they were kill shots, not a good habit to get into. Notice I only really do this once I get past 50 yards or so. It's been fun and tough only shooting one arrow a day. Thanks for this!

May try with the longbow next!

Day 1
Pro defiant 34 @63#
Black eagle X-Impacts
Valkyrie 150g field tip
Hog father single pin

The weeds might obscure day 7 visibility
56 yards, cool Monday evening, light RtL breeze.

Little low, might need to change tape.

Day 2- 7am after working all night. Cool, no breeze 60 yards.

Day 3- 5:45pm after working a transport since Tuesday night (42 hours of work)
Decent breeze in my face, sun in my eyes, 62 yards.

Aimed at top of target cause it was the only thing barely visible and been hitting low the last 2 shots.
You can see the one fletching stuck in the board where I missed about 4" high. I retrieved my broken arrow and tossed it where it is for artistic purposes...

Day 4 7:55pm slight breeze left to right estimated 40ish yards no range finder. Different arrow cause I broke the last one.

Day 5. 7:05am. After working all night. Cool, no breeze. 52 yards

Day 6. 6:40am. Again after work. No wind. 60 yards... almost fubard it. For as much as it felt like I jerked the trigger I'm surprised I hit the block...

I do like that this really causes me to focus thru each shot. I have done something similar by shooting one arrow , wait 4 or 5 hours then shoot one more.
Tomorrow night I will try to shoot at last light to really give it that hunting, 1 arrow feel.

I'm in! Took me long enough to get started.

I won't give you the whole backstory of this year, but let's just say it's been busy. Moved 3 hours to my hometown, bought a new house, kept the duplex we lived in and remodeled it, have a 2 year old, started a new job, have 2nd baby due in 10 days...

All that said, I haven't shot anywhere close to what I normally do. I'm happy if I shoot once a week, but most of the time it is probably averaging more like once every two weeks. I also switched to a 5 pin sight when my 7 pin crapped out on me last fall. So I'm shooting my range at my current max pin set up, 60 yards. Being used to shooting at 70 and 80, I'm hoping that helps here even though I haven't been shooting.

I live in what's called the "Big Thicket" in southeast Texas. It's a mostly impenetrable pine forest. So it's always hot and humid this time of year with very little wind.

Here's my setup:

Mathews Switchback, 29.5" draw at 68lbs
Axcel 5 pin
Trophy Taker rest
Quivilizer
Victory Vforce V1 300s w/ 125 grain heads. Around 446 grains and about 265fps.

Shot #1, Friday 6/2 - Given I've only shot 2 arrows in the last couple weeks, I was happy with the shot. This was right after a 35 minute hike with 40ish pounds. No wind and the shot felt good. I use Dan Evans' mental shot mantra, "Level, settle, follow thru".

Shot #2, Saturday 6/3. I felt myself pull this one slightly at the shot. Otherwise my sequence felt good.

Shot #3, Wednesday 6/7, very slight left to right breeze. Warm and sunny. 4 day gap between shots but release felt good. Got stuck holding high but was able to stay calm and bring my pin down into the kill zone.

#4, Thursday 6/8, beautiful evening. Really low humidity for our standards and low 80s. No wind. Had my 2 year old tell me "make it count daddy" before the shot. It payed off.

I'm back! Had our 2nd baby two weeks ago so I've had more important things to do! Waylon Patrick was born on the 14th. He and mama are doing great. My 5th shot was Monday 6/12 with my 2 year old on my back in a kid carrier. Hadn't done that before and it showed. Was a little jumpy in anticipating the possibility of him moving. He didn't, I just rushed the shot.

#6, Tuesday 6/28. Daylight shot. No wind and humid. Was pretty pleased after a 2 week hiatus.

Finally #7! Shot at lunch today. Hot with a slight wind. Don't remember which direction lol. Not enough to effect my shot. I tried to tuck it low and tight and punched it a little. Probably worst execution since I can blame the other bad shot on my 2 year old ;).

Overall, I'm pretty happy with how I shot. These 7 shots are literally all I've taken in 26 days. This is the least I've shot since I started bowhunting 14 years ago. Life happens... I feel good at 60 right now but the next couple months are going to see lots of arrows headed down range. Thanks for this Robby!

7-Day Challenge...I'm In!

I’m in also!
I am just getting back into shooting a bow. I grew up hunting and fishing in Upper Michigan, hunted with a bow for about 2 years and didn’t get a shot at anything. After high school graduation spent 11 years in the military. So I did not get a chance to shoot (archery that is) or hunt. I was introduced to Mule deer hunting with a rifle in 2012 and fell in love with it. I have been out 2 more times since then and was fortunate enough to get a nice buck all three times. After reading Robby’s book, Hunting Big Mule Deer, I realized I am missing out on a lot of great hunting with a bow and muzzle loader. So I am getting back into archery after being away from it for almost 27 years. I saw this 7-Day challenge and it sounds like a great idea. I may try this several times throughout the year to evaluate where I am at. After getting setup and practicing for about three months now I think I can call my max effective range at about 50 yards.

My setup:
Mathews 2015 Ballistic, 28" draw length set at 70#
Trophy ridge Whisker Biscuit rest
IQ Pro Hunter Bowsight w/ Retina Lock
Carbon Express Maxima 250 arrows 31" long with 100gr field tips
NockOn Silverback tension release

My Target center circle is also 9” in diameter.
Target.jpg

Day 1 – May 22nd 69° F wind at 3 mph 138° to my arrow flight - a little unsteady on the hold.
Day_1.jpg

Day 2 – May 24th 53° F wind at 6 mph 315° to my arrow flight – nice sight picture good smooth release.
Day_2.jpg

Day 3 – May 25th 67° F wind at 3 mph 285° to my arrow flight – tension release seemed to take forever to go off, pulled it.
Day_3.jpg

Day 4 – May 26th 63° F wind at 2 mph 138° to my arrow flight – a bit wobbly at release.
Day_4.jpg

The last three shots and video are in my next post.

7-Day Challenge...I'm In cont..

I had several days between 4th and 5th day shots. I realize it is only one shot per day but there is just too much to do this Spring to get out and shoot every day.

Day 5 – May 31st 69° F wind at 4 mph 176 ° to my arrow flight – felt really rusty after not shooting for 4 days.
Day_5.jpg

Day 6 – June 1st 67° F wind at 3 mph 126° to my arrow flight – good sight picture concentrated on a smooth release.
Day_6.jpg

Day 7 – June 2nd 69° F wind at 3 mph 106° to my arrow flight – videoing it added some pressure, I may have pulled it a bit.
Day_7.jpg

Here is video of my 7th shot.

I will say it is taking a bit to get consistent with the tension release but I am beginning to like it.

Great site and Great Idea Robby! I hope to participate more on this site.

I will join in on this! I'll start up sat evening or Sunday.

I'll come back and edit this post.

Forgot to include what I am shooting!
Old Matthews switchback XT
QAD ultra HDX
IQ 5 pin
Gold Tip Hunter XT w/125 gr up front.
Blazer wraps and vanes done by yours truly

DAY1:
Took my first shot tonight. I chose 50 yards as my max.
Conditions were ideal.
75F wind from the NE @ 1.5MPH

DAY2:
88F wind gusting from NW 15+MPH
Compensated for strong winds and was getting blown all over. Arrow didn't seem to be effected by wind. Hit very close to where released but did pull the shot a bit with poor follow through. Really wanted to take another shot!

DAY 3. 54F No wind to speak of.
Really liking this challenge. Today I rushed the shot, stopped off on the way to the gym and I am running late.

DAY4: 63F wind from SE @ 7mph...PULLED bad.

DAY 5: 64F wind 2mph from North. Actually took my time and focused instead of rushing through it.
Combo.jpg

Day 6
60F no wind to note.
Everything felt good today, wasn't very stable but shot was good, follow through was on Really enjoying this. I will definitely start all sessions at 1 shot max yardage.
20170608_064540.jpg

Day 7!
80F wind from SE at 11mph

Good job Mapkoe! Enjoyed watching you put that last one in the kill zone. No problem on skipping days, either, as that's just like hunting. So I understand you, you only shot 7 arrows in 7 non-consecutive shooting days? If so, you're qualified. Let me know and I'll get you on the list. And glad the book inspired you to go multi-weapon. You'll get more tags that way!

After watching this thread for a while I finally decided to jump in and start yesterday. I've been really working at extending my range for my first western bow season after moving from the Midwest last year and I've definitely been making progress. I'll be shooting at 60 yards which is what I'm hoping I'll be extremely comfortable with by September(not quite there yet since I'm still getting some random fliers). Here's my setup
Old school Hoyt LaserTec 70lbs 28" DL
QAD drop away rest
And old Cobra sight (waiting impatiently for my new Spot Hogg)
Easton Axis 340

Day 1
Everything felt good with this one. No wind
f72e3d9a045a7e2071ed51a82d255912.jpg

Day 2
This morning I knew I was low at the release. Possibly from no coffee yet? I think I might have rushed the shot a little. It was about 5" from center
657d1781276993aeb94cb46a88c072f8.jpg

Day 3
When you get a whole day to think about the one shot you take, you really want to make it count, just like in hunting, which is why I like the idea of this challenge so much. Today I took my time and my release felt way better than yesterday and it showed.
b617b5d01d9b9eafee3726dd3b9ae7c8.jpg

Day 4
I knew it would be tough to only shoot one arrow a day and after this mornings shot I almost quit the challenge just to shoot more. No wind at all, it was just me. My sight picture looked good and I punched the trigger immediately rather than letting the shot break on its own. Ended up about 6" left
66e6b58b3c2c48514b016eff2038eaff.jpg

Day 5
No wind at all this morning. I just took my time and my shot execution felt much better than yesterday.
d75df99a07887ad2a6578294bda2bbb1.jpg

Day 6
Not so hot this morning. Just flat out made a bad shot. The arrow ended up about 7" from center
6d916690432cd9288a38d0db8c0d37db.jpg

Day 7
Well I got it done and while I'm super excited to go back to shooting more arrows every day this was a real eye opening experience and I am very happy that I did it

Started the 7 arrow challenge today. I'm shooting a prime rize. 72#. 28 inch draw. Trophy taker smackdown pro. 10 inch beestinger pro hunter. Black gold 3 pin slider.
Black eagle deep impact 350 spine arrow. 3 fletch aae pro max vanes. 100 grain point. Arrow weighs 430. Shooting 280 fps. I've shot a Scott rhino release for the last 2 years but started shooting a tru fire thumb button a few months ago. I can't decide which one I like more.
I'm shooting my target at 48 yards. That's as far as I can stretch it in my yard. First shot today was great weather. 90 degrees and no wind.

Day 2
c3d3c6c13eb349051aa1dda7b0c707f7.jpg

Weather was good. No wind. Settled and released. I find that if I try to aim for over 5 seconds I am not nearly as accurate.

Day 3
9a7eedb775cba4cd7e18a9be4eeec55e.jpg

Took a few days off for work in Montana. Shot low today. I will be switching stabilizers soon to a stokerized carbon stasis. It is ordered. My beestinger might have too much weight up front. I will adjust tomorrow.

Day 4
f2a5dbfa5a9673d95ff6126a243e28d0.jpg

Shot felt good today. About 5 mph wind. Took one weight off my stabilizer. The stasis should come Monday. Also changing my arrows to black eagle renegade 300 spine and 125 grain tip. Haven't finished building but should be ready to go next week.

Day 5
c6909cb0b645ce06db3d144374598a4d.jpg

Today was a little more windy. About 10 mph. Really concentrated on my draw and had to let down a few times after I felt the draw and anchor were both good. Also tried shooting with some new outdoor research gloves that I will be wearing for early season. They felt great. No torque on the bow.

Day 6
a1905ad909c8f77c0323024cc110e2b6.jpg

Look what finally came!

So I have been slacking. My wife and I are getting ready to move and haven't been able to shoot until today.
b6085fd77f246dfbb449a0fdf2cffd92.jpg

It was really hot today. 95 degrees. My shot felt good. I was really impressed with the new stasis. It is lightweight but still balances very well.

Day 7

73e5406614a82387fa301c6c84989be6.jpg

Last shot of the 1 arrow challenge. Solid shot, I'm happy with it. Thank you rokslide this has really increased my confidence for hunting. Now just waiting for the total archery challenge in salt lake and hunting deer/elk this fall in Utah! This is my 4th year bowhunting and I haven't killed a big game animal yet but I am fixing to change that.

Day 7
Pro defiant 34 @63#
Day1-3 BEA X-impact 300
Day 4-5 BEA vintage 350
Day 6 GT pro hunter 340
Day 7 back to the vintage.

The first picture is from where I shot from. Over the rocks 1' beside a little tree. Only the very top of the target visible.
287fb7cc9345da2f0778a91c78708d7c.jpg

The second picture is where it ended up. Low and right but got foam so not having the right tape, and switching spines I call it a win.
5195c95e975f91e3170a411834c6038e.jpg

So it took me 9 days I think to take those 7 shots. And I'm dying to shoot more cause it's obvious I need to get her dialed in. Cool idea and I'm glad I partook.

I took video of the shot but it won't give me the option to attach it from my phone.

That could be the next challenge. Hold your draw for 20 seconds and then shoot. Not that it would happen all the time but like I learned in the military..."Train the way you fight!" If it can happen why not prepare for it??? Anything that can improve the chances of a quick clean kill....Just my thoughts.
