1:8 Tikka .243 velocities

Looking at buying one of the 1:8 tikka .243s and chopping and threading the barrel at 20”. I was curious if anyone has some velocity’s they’re getting in these guns with 105-110 class bullets. Forgive me if this info’s out there already but I haven't seen it. I’m aware it doesn’t really matter but I love to number crunch and its all entertainment anyway. All of my tikkas have been 100-150 fps slower than my other barrels of same length so I was curious if that’s still the trend.

I have one and shot to 3050 fps with zero pressure signs. 105 grain. So far it doesn't shoot like I would like at all accuracy wise. I'm going to try another bullet and hopefully test it this week depending on weather.

You are hitting pressure before you hit the max reference velocity?

Pressure does exist. Following a book load, velocity is the best indicator of pressure. Not unusual for it to take a little bit more powder than what the book lists to hit the velocity listed as max in a reloading manual

Best load in my 22" with 108 eldm is 41.3 h4350 at 2916fps.

H4350 got up to 2975 and h1000 got up to 3050.

I don’t follow reloading books for max loads. I test for pressure then back off. All tikka factory barrels I’ve loaded for have been consistently been slow.

That’s great to hear. I have both powders on hand. If its accurate with H1000 that’d be great.

H4350 is more accurate for me. Around 48gr of h1000 was pretty good in Starline brass. I topped out at 48.7 but definitely some pressure over 48.2.

H4350 is more accurate for me. Around 48gr of h1000 was pretty good in Starline brass. I topped out at 48.7 but definitely some pressure over 48.2.

Hodgdon is showing max load of 49.2gr with H1000 loaded at 2.70", with pressure of 58,200.

.02" off lands. Can't remember overall but definitely longer than 2.7". There'd be some major compression at 49.2. May be fine in different brass. Velocity was 3050 at 48.7 from a 22" tube, which Hodgdon lists 3050 at 49.2 from a 24". I know, I know, another slow tikka...

I know you asked Mulyhuntr, but I'll echo the statement that H4350 gets the best accuracy with 108's. I load mine 2.235" base to ogive. H1000 wasn't good with the 108's, but it showed some promise with 95gr ballistic tips.

I’ve reached pressure before I could achieve similar velocity to what I was getting out of a mild load in a same length barrel quite a few times. This .243 I’ll have to shoot unknowns loads for awhile because I don’t have access to my bench so I won’t be able to chase pressure anyways.

Just looked and I'm 2.245" cbto

I hit the velocity ceiling of 2800 fps with the 105 BTHP before seeing pressure signs and well before the Hornady max powder load. That’s with the 22” barrel so I’m actually going to back off a bit.
