I like your argument for the AR15, and you are probably right. When I saw the title of the thread I immediately thought pump action shotgun. Inside of 100 yards, there is nothing it can't do.
Does anyone have any info/experience with Federal's CenterStrike open tip match 77gr? Supposedly it's a new bullet released about a year ago. Is it just a rebrand/knock off of something else? Anybody know of any testing done in game or gel?
Thanks Form! I heard you on the Exo podcast a few months back and realized I knew nothing about terminal ballistics or bullet construction. I am still trying to wrap my head around it all, and the information you have been putting out is super helpful!
Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I just recently found this thread, read through the whole thing, and thought the in depth explanations of the way the 115 DTAC performs to be super interesting. If I understand this right, it fragments at high impact velocities (2200ish fps and above ?)...
I would love some more details on what parts you used to build your UL gasser. How does the weight compare to your straight pull solo? How has the reliability been?
I used a 2 moa red dot on my muzzleloader this year. I was comfortable out to 200 yards in ideal conditions and killed a buck at 150. My buddy was getting consistent hits out to 300 yards on a 12”x24” target, but he passed up a shot at roughly 300 because the deer felt so small at that range...
Due to new hunting regulations I used a 1x red dot on my muzzleloader for the first time this year and shot a muley buck at about 150 yards. A little extra magnification at that range would have been REALLY nice. He was bedded on a hillside where he blended in extremely well. I had to go back...
If barrel life is concern, have you looked into a 6 ARC? Its has a longer barrel life, much cheaper ammo ($1.70/round vs $2.34/round for factory 108 ELDM on Midway), and stays above 1800 fps out to 600+ yards with factory ammo.
Edit: The 6 ARC recoils less as well.
Nice buck! Is that 6 big game animals so far this year with your Howa Mini 6ARC? Sorry if that's creepy..... I have been following all the small caliber success on big game and 6 ARC build threads pretty religiously lately.......
Are you using a Salmon River Solutions Arca rail to attach your...
This is awesome! Nice job @TheGman! I had never been that interested in AR's until I came across this thread. The experience and ingenuity here is impressive! Thanks for sharing!
Being a super tough, synthetic puffy it is just the wrong piece of gear for my use case. It is way too heavy and bulky. I mainly backpack hunt across a few different states in the lower 48 (Utah & Idaho mostly), so I have zero need for synthetic insulation. Also, I only wear a puffy in static...
Was able to kill this guy about a month ago. Just over 30" outside spread. Found him in July and was able to kill him in September with a muzzleloader. Definitely a partner effort on this one. Could not have done it without a ton of help from my buddy. Best part was that he killed his target...
I have bought one tent per year the past 4 years trying to figure out what works best for me. I have spent at least 14 nights in each of the following: six moon designs lunar duo, kifaru paratarp, sea to summit telos tr2, and now the Argali owyhee 1p. For my style of backpack hunting the Argali...
Over 1900 fps at 604 yards with factory eldms? That's awesome! What's your muzzle velocity and the elevation where you shot the bull? I'm in the process of putting together a 6 arc myself. The damage at that speed/distance is impressive. Congrats on the bulls!
Oh good to know. I have been looking into that one and the Banish Backcountry. How have you liked it? Are there any big reasons why you went with the Scythe over others?
@Ferrulewax Shoot! I should included that above. I am looking at either the 103 ELD-X or 108 ELD-M factory loads from Hornady in 6 arc. Thanks for the chart! That helps!
Hi all,
I've been a lurker for years, but I have never posted before. I listened to Form on the Exo podcast and since then I have spent a ridiculous amount of time familiarizing myself with the .223 and 6mm success on big game threads. Thanks to this thread I recently sold my Savage Ultralite...
