A lightweight 300 PRC or 300 WM in a folding chassis stock? No thank you.
I see the factory guns are 9 lbs bare. I’m pretty happy with my 6.5 CM for a backpacking gun. For me, that’s where the strength of the Cross is. Relatively, lightweight, compact, accurate.
Maybe I’ll get a chance...
Would love to hunt with my Belgian malinois - unfortunately it’s illegal to hunt big game with dogs
in Alberta. You can use them for cougar, but nothing else as I understand. 🤷♂️
Take your pick. I’d use a mono metal on elk in 6.5 PRC. IMO, a 7 PRC is ideal - the sectional density and momentum is much higher for a 160, 175 or 180 7 mm bullet than a 130, 143, or 147 6.5 prc. That matters on big, tough game like elk.
TBH though, if it’s for an occasional elk hunt -...
I’ve got mine. Works perfectly. Prefer it to the magpul, Harris, and Spartan I’ve got. I prefer it to the atlas’ I’ve used a shooting courses. Got the Spartan springbok too. Very great for quick setups, moving place to place and love the rare earth magnet attachment.
It’s an operator...
I would discourage the use of sleep aids in general and in the backcountry in particular. The quality of your sleep is worse, and your awareness is impacted. I woke one night to find my tent collapsing because of heavy, unseasonal snowfall to the point that trees and branches were coming down...
Nightforce NXS compact 2.5-10x40. I’ve got one and love it. At a slightly lighter weight, the Leupold VX5 3-15x40 is great. I’ve got a VX6 3-18x50 and would downsize and skip the illumination if I had to do it again. Haven’t owned a Zeiss or S&B myself, but know that Zeiss makes great...
Performance. People want large objectives, reliable elevation dials, FFP, and extreme durability. All of these features come at a weight cost. That said, a lot of people are carrying heavier scopes with higher magnification than they really need.
I’ve got a Leupold 3-9 ultralight and a...
Go for it. Have some sort of communication device - inreach etc if out of cell reception. Also, have a plan or people you can call for a pack out. Packing a moose or elk out by yourself can be a BIG job.
Best approach is to avoid. If not, bear spray or a long gun. Compare any hunting rifle to a handgun and it’s not even close.
Don’t hunt alone, take all bear precautions.
That’s alright, it’ll give you more time to figure out exactly what you want. I went with a complete rifle, but there’s a lot of good actions with integral rails. Paired with a carbon six or proof prefit they’re as good as anything out there IMO.
We’re spoiled for options these days...
Great choice; the better of the two in my opinion. The 7 prc will be a nice upgrade from you 7 RM with similar recoil. I went with a NEXUS switch barrel 6.5 and 300 PRC. If I was just going with one, it’d be the 7 PRC. Best ballistic performance of the three and the sectional density of 180...
Great news! I think a six Creedmoor is in my future. Love the idea of a drop in barrel for this rifle - what tools are required to swap barrels?
PS. Any idea how I can get one of these in Canada?
That’s the one I’m interested in. Have a cross in 6.5 CM, but for a coyote gun and first deer rifle for my boys (6 and 9 yo) think it’ll be ideal.
Leaning towards one of the barrels from Schnee’s or IBI. 22CM looks fun, but not big game legal here in Canada. Are aftermarket barrels...
