Hunting in the 1980s and 90s

Ohhh, the 80’s and 90’s! This is what I remember growing up in Oregon. You could buy a OTC deer and elk tag and hunt anywhere in the state, and there were more mule deer to hunt. Your hunting cloths were the itchy wool that you bought from the army surplus store. Most private land owners, if...

    Would you buy this scope?

I would definitely be in for 1!!! Ive held off buying the Nightforce nxs 2.5x10 the last couple years hoping they would have made a 3x12 model!

    Long shots

Best/Luckiest shot for me was at a friends cabin, I was helping open his road in the spring from the winter of a bunch of blown down trees. I had a spring turkey tag in my pocket but no shotgun or even thought of hunting them during that weekend. Get back to friends cabin after working, to have...

Thoughts and experience with mystery ranch beartooth 80/85

For myself I would look at a different pack, but everyone has different body types and some packs will fit better than others. If you can I would try on different packs first before buying. I will say both my buddies love there Exo K4 and Stone Glacier Xcurve packs!

Thoughts and experience with mystery ranch beartooth 80/85

I’ve used the MR beartooth for 3 seasons now and have packed out around a couple dozen deer/elk that I have shot or friend and families have anywhere from 700 yards to 10 miles from the truck. Below are my pros and cons Pros: Durable/Bombproof, after the hunt I throw bag in washing machine at...

No BS - Best Bino Harness w/ No Magnet

I’ve been using the Kuiu bino harness the last 4 years, and still going strong. Been looking at getting a new one (since I have an addiction of always buying new hunting gear) but haven’t found one worth me spending the money from what I have.

    Meat hang times and options

I have a buddy who has a meat locker that he keeps the temp in the mid 30’s (would be like 2C I think) that hangs his elk and deer up for close to a month before butchering. Not my style, longest I’ve gone is a week and that’s if I shot the animal on the first day and helped out the hunting...

Family trip to the Oregon coast, Suggestions?

if want to go fishing, hit up a guide out of Pacific City and do a dory trip for some bottom fish. You never had a ride like launching out through the surf! While your fishing have the family run/climb the sand dune, then meet up at the Pelican for lunch/dinner when you get back from fishing.

    Danner Elk Hunter

I wore the Danner Elk hunters for years. I would destroy a pair in 1 hunting season it seemed like. Either I would break half of the BOB sole knobs off, blow out the stitching on the side above where the sole connects, waterproofing would leak, or cut the leather through the boot from a sharp...

    your 6.5 CM/elk experience

Sure did leave an open avenue on the private/public land comment, deserve the hits on that one! I don't know, roughly 10-15 between myself and friends through the years sprinkled between .243win, 25-06 and a 270. Been hunting since late 80's and most were shot with those calibers when I was...

    your 6.5 CM/elk experience

I agree with you on learning good shooting habits with lighter calibers. But that should be a stepping stone to the next caliber up for the animal you want to hunt. If you want to only hunt deer, antelope or elk in non pressured private land, then stop at a 6.5 cm, at an effective range, for all...

    your 6.5 CM/elk experience

I agree, I think that the movement to 6.5 or less rifle calibers for elk isn’t going away, but doesn’t mean I agree with it. I do believe that with the newer bullets, heavier bullets and faster twist calibers out now that one caliber down from below works just as well. So if you used a 30 cal...

    Your Elk Hunting Rifle

I have 3 elk rifles and I choose which one is my favorite depending on the hunting terrain I’m in. Heavy Timber: Remington 700 LSS 338 RUM with 250 accubonds. All-around terrain day hunting from camp (timber pockets, across canyon shots, open fields, no more than 6-8 miles from truck or camp)...

What's the deal with everyone using suppresors?

I appreciate the offer and the reply. Learn something new everyday! Never designated myself to hunting coyotes before so had no idea how suppressor sound works with them. Only popped them off when they gave me an opportunity while big game hunting. When I was talking animals I should have...

What's the deal with everyone using suppresors?

So far I haven’t jumped on the suppressor band wagon! I believe that all the other reasons for suppressors other than noise reduction are company advertising selling points to get people to buy! My buddies all have suppressors, and I have shot theirs. I do like how they reduce the noise and see...
