    Trekking Poles

I got my wife some nice ones from Costco; carbon fiber and cork grip. She uses them on pretty tame trails. I use some beat-up aluminum, twist-to-lock poles because I use them hard. I like aluminum because when it breaks it doesn’t splinter, and you can bend it back to shape (sort of). If you are...

Your (limited to 3) top gear items for 2024

zeiss conquest 8x32 hd binos. Favorite purchase of the year. Slik 632 tripod with aziak backcountry lite ball head. Not only did they hold the binos rock steady, but not holding the binos meant my hands stayed warmer and more comfortable. Wiser BA-7 sparrow adaptor to tie everything together.

Help me design and build a Bino harness

Update! I got the liner put together. I cut up a yoga mat for padding and glued it in place, then sewed a pouch and glued it, and finally sewed it in. This is my second try at a hood. Not necessarily happy with it, but it will be easy to swap it out if I can figure out how to make it better. I...

    Trail running shoes?

I’ve thought about it, if I hunted earlier seasons. La Sportiva makes a waterproof version I sometimes wish I had when running in slush or after a monsoon. On the other hand, I like my boots not necessarily for the ankle support, but also for the protection from rocks and cactus. If those aren’t...

    Prepping for float trip

I’m working through a calisthenics progression where my max reps is in the 10-20 range or even less, but regular old pushups are endurance; that’s a good point. When I say run with weights, think the old-school heavy hands workouts. A pound or two in each hand with a large range of motion. It...

    Prepping for float trip

I’ve gotten a lot of good info here on rucking, and I’ve made great strides in my fitness for rucking and general strength and endurance. My buddy got a float permit for next year and we are planning a mule deer hunt around the float trip. I am the only one with much rafting experience, but...

    Hunt Debrief

Yeah, I’m in NM. Tags are easier as a resident, but never guaranteed. On our way out of camp we passed some guys road hunting, and I cruised on by without telling them we had just tagged out. Ya gotta be in place before first light, and be willing to hike away from the roads.

    Hunt Debrief

Another lesson learned: there are times to go slow and times to be aggressive. Getting them right is important.

    Hunt Debrief

Exactly! I’ve been watching deer my whole life, but spotting them and glassing them, especially in desert terrain, was way more difficult than I thought it would be.

    Hunt Debrief

I had a great mule deer hunt this year, thanks to a good buddy. He showed me some of his favorite spots, and I learned a LOT. Opening morning he put me on a ridge while he and his kids were spotting from the flats. I had a herd of does pass within a hundred yards an hour after first light. The...

Help me design and build a Bino harness

It is. I’ve had to re-do several things after getting them backward. Luckily it’s just thread and I have a seam ripper. I didn’t put a drawing of everything all together, just the pieces to cut out.

Help me design and build a Bino harness

More progress pics. It’s starting to look like something… I had to baste together the panels because it was getting too thick for pins. I am at the limit of what my sewing machine can do, but it did get the job done. The seams with the wings are the thickest and they are done. The bottom was...

This may be the best pun in the history of rokslide.

Help me design and build a Bino harness

Did the wings. Next up is the back, which includes another pocket. I was going to make it a zipper but I ordered the wrong size. I might make it an elastic pocket like the sides, or scrounge a zipper off one of the kids’ old outfits. Thoughts on zipper vs elastic? This is the pocket I like to...

    Scout to Hunt glitching

Update: support says the glitch is fixed, but I still can’t see any of my markers. And at some point they discontinued offline maps for the free version without warning. They gave me a code for a free premium membership for a year, but I’m going to switch to OnX. Price difference is five bucks a...

Help me design and build a Bino harness

Slow progress. I had to undo and redo most of what I’ve got so far, but here it is. This is the front panel and the two sides. Next I’ll cut out and assemble the wings.

    Scout to Hunt glitching

I’ve thought about doing that very thing. We’ll see if this bug fix can be out in a reasonable amount of time. Mostly, I wanted to alert anyone else using StH that they are having issues and to check your app before heading out.

    Scout to Hunt glitching

I checked my app this week and it wouldn’t load. Restarted my phone, app still wouldn’t load. Deleted app and re-downloaded. Now it loads but all my waypoints are gone. Customer service says there’s a bug in the new software release and they will fix it ‘soon’. If you use Scout To Hunt, and...

    Kifaru belt won’t stay secure

Took a look. I think I figured out what you mean. Is this right now? I bought the pack used and took it apart a couple of times. I was guessing a bit when I put it back together. I appreciate everyone’s help!
