[Upstate NY] Rocky outcrop ridge for hunting cover?

Macintosh just gave you a cliff notes version of a masters course in Northeast hunting. There’s a lot to unpack there. Some of that preseason work can be done with topo maps/onX, locating terrain features that are advantageous to deer movement. Take into account the time of year that you’ll...

Education appreciated on a fine rifle/caliber

Didn’t U. Singh hang out with Jim Corbet??? Thats something right there. Ive killed some animals with that round and it is formidable. If your model 88 has truly been proofed for 8x57JS, you’ve got a killer on your hands. But maybe do some reading on the difference between a model ‘98 and a...

Has anyone cut a carbon barrel?

Thanks Rock, I appreciate knowing the differences in barrels. My plan, if I were to really do it, would be to cut the barrel longer than I wanted to end at, then ‘trim off‘ an inch or so of carbon, and then thread a stopper and red locktire it in place. In theory it should work. But as you...

Has anyone cut a carbon barrel?

I have a proof research CF 6.5Cm barrel. I love it. Except, it’s a bit longer than I want At 22”. Has anyone cut a CF barrel? I have a lathe. I have cut and crowned barrels before with great success. I have made (legal) form 1 suppressors with great results. So, I’m not so concerned...

    Rebarrel or cut my losses

I would 100% have them rethread. Make your decisions from there. A barrel with bad threading is worthless.

Savage model 10 upgrade questions (Stock, trigger, etc…)

Forest, depending on what iteration of the model 10 you have (bottom vs top bolt release, 4.4” spacing etc) there are a couple of options. I have a Boyd’s laminate that I’ve modified to my liking as well as a KRG Bravo. And I’m getting ready to sell a Stocky’s carbon fiber that i just never got...

    Anyone interested in hornady brass?

I think you're in VT, if you‘re going to leave it at a range let me know which one and I’ll swing by. I don’t NEED it but I do reload for 6.5CM.

Which states prohibit or limit field-quartering of big game?

In VT you don’t have to present the deer for check in (you can check it in on line) except during the regular rifle season. And to check it in on-line they ask for a picture but don’t require it. So, packing them out quartered can’t be illegal. You CAN break down bear in VT and then check it...

New version Browning A5 Sweet 16 opinions

I love the 16ga. I have several shotguns that are chamber for it. While I don’t have the new browning, I have an old Remington sportsman in 16 that is based off the auto 5 sweet 16. I shoot it a lot and it is my favorite grouse gun. And if you need it, Boss sells non-toxic loads for the 16ga.

Care to share opinions on bear bows?

I bought a Bear Divergent RTH package for my wife a few years ago. It is a great package and she shoots it very well. It got her into the woods very fast with very little thought (all the pieces were already on the bow). She’s killed 3 deer with it so far. I think the RTH packages are a...

Care to share opinions on bear bows?

That statement is just nonsense. I have several bear bows. They’ve killed a few deer.

10 shot Group, How do you aim?

This^^ The point of a ten round group is to understand the true cone of accuracy of that particular load/rifle combo. If you are shooting out the POA, I think you just figured out that the cone is pretty good. plus, even if the center is shot out of your POA you can still center the reticle...

Cheap range ammo alternative to Black Hills TMK 77

Depends on what you are training. If I'm out just trying to work on form and positions at close range I use whatever I have on hand as long as it groups decent, including 55gr and 62gr FMJ. If I'm working on longer range practice I'll use 77gr SMK that I reload with the same load as TMK. The...
