What do you mean by a tight chamber?
Tight/short throat spec?
A tight neck that makes you neck turn the brass?
A tight case body back at the .200" line from the bolt face?
Just curious and why I'm asking.
If you have a tight case body.... that will make bolt opening a problem but how much...
That's what I always say.... your going to do a test... you have to do qty. because one barrel etc... might not tell you anything conclusive.
When guys get into it with me on why claims by this or that barrel maker last longer than another brand... I say this....
You need 10 barrels at least...
Here is what we are doing for the 7/6.5PRC round. It's not Saami and everyone involved that I listed is doing it all out of they're own pockets.... load data from different guys etc... is all over the place and no one and I mean no one has done any actual pressure data testing. So there isn't...
Pick a caliber.
How many rounds are on the barrel? That's a variable. A new barrel vs a barrel with a high round count on it will be different.
How the barrel was made is a variable and what the bore and groove sizes are and chamber spec are a variable.
A magnum type caliber will tend to be...
The engine oil comparison is this.... do zero maintenance... expect problems.
The number one thing we see when a customer has a problem is from no cleaning and improper cleaning.
Had a guy send in a 223 bolt gun about a year ago. Shot 750ish rounds thru it with out cleaning. Put it away dirty...
Yep been down that road and still go down that road.
Good example and I'll use it again. I had two guys call me with in a month of each other. 6.5PRC was the caliber for both. The one guy also sends me pictures of the throat and says... look at all the fire cracking. The barrel quite shooting...
Also some cartridges like 26 Nosler for example.... can build fouling up so fast that some ammo/bullet makers couldn't get enough consistent data to put it in they're loading manuals.
I've got too much data from ammunition test barrels that we make for ammo and bullet makers to see what happens if you don't clean them.
See my post #64.
This is an extreme example/cartridge but it is an example.....
"Also I can't name the cartridge.... but one place learned from early...
I've shot out barrels but sorry.... I've done routine/cleaning maintenance on them.
Also and I'll say this again... put it away dirty.... even s.s. barrels and that can cause pitting/etching to the bore.
Didn't take it as an attack.... so no worries.
This is a very difficult thing to diagnose...
Yep lucky.
There are just too many variables but I will stand and say... don't clean it and problems are bound to happen some where.
Also think of this... once you have an issue and it doesn't matter if it's an accuracy issue (carbon fouling can cause accuracy issues as well and not just...
Not poking at you or anyone here but we get this a lot... and we will say this...
Would you drive your car and never change the oil and filter?
I will also say the following in no random order....
Type of powder and cartridge/case capacity is a huge variable. The bigger the case capacity and...
To the owner of the barrel and to reply to this as it has been bothering me.
What the owner told us either by writing or on the phone etc... about round count, or it being dirty etc... we never in any replies that I know of called him word for word a "LIAR". What we see and what he tells us...
I just wanted you to make sure you knew I wasn't picking on ya! That's all.
Just trying to answer questions and put somethings in perspective for everyone. That's all.
Here is some other data and this relates to 277SF and 80k psi pressure....
The steel case head/two piece case design and running the rounds at 80k psi.... the 400modBB material has stood up better vs standard s.s. or c.m. barrels to the chambers getting rings in them where that steel/brass...
I'm not picking on ATMAT here but I'm going to branch off a little bit on the +P chamber and wildcat chamber stuff along with some Saami chamber stuff. I'm going to give everyone food for thought and again it's what I/we see on stuff and in this case things that are saami spec or partially saami...
Shipping was sitting on it as he was told by Brady to wait in case we needed to do something else with it.
If it doesn't make shipping today it will go tomorrow. I think it will make it today. They pick up here anytime now.
Later, Frank
Thanks!
At times and I'll be honest we've replaced things when we knew there was absolutely nothing wrong. Maybe it was a gut feeling maybe it was because there was truly nothing wrong with the barrel that we could see or measure or in how it shot where we shot it personally.
A good example...
The barrel came in and Brady worked on it/did the initial inspection. Not making excuses but here is some more info on the timeline etc... right around that time.... on short notice not just Brady but Mark here had to have pretty much emergency surgeries. That took them out for a couple of...
