If you’re wanting to increase your chances of having an accurate, non picky barrel, you usually get what you pay for. I’d highly recommend purchasing a higher end barrel and then having a custom shop make a prefit (unknown, straight jacket, etc). I’ve had C6, proof, and criterion prefits for...
I started drinking the rokslide Kool aide and using smaller cartridges. I also had first hand experience with my outfitters in west texas smoking free range elk and audad out to 800 yards with 18" 6.5 PRCs. Between the info found here and my experience, I do not have much of a need for the big...
No dumb questions asked thus far.
I used to run a 30 Sherman mag (300 prc ai) in a 20” barrel. A group of outfitters that I use in west Texas run 18” 6.5 prcs and have started to add in a few 7 prcs as of this year. With the short barreled 6.5 prcs, they’re taking down free range audad, elk...
I spend a lot of time in stx myself. Been on some nilgai hunts on one of the Kennedy pastures. A 300 prc with a 225 Eldm is one of the most destructive combos I’ve seen on game. They will punch through a leg bone and then blow up inside the animal and often times no exit. If you miss you shot...
The mystery and myths around short barrels is entertaining….. you hear people say “I want to have an efficient cartridge, don’t want unburnt powder going out of my barrel, might as well shoot a 308”, blah blah blah.
Since when did a majority of rifle shooters become extremely concerned with...
I think it is difficult to place an objective speed gain by going with the 30sm over a 300 prc. The sharper shoulder angle helps hide pressure better and allegedly better brass life.
Sherman guys will claim that you can run everything Sherman at the speed of light.
If you have a slower barrel...
30 sm is a 300 prc ai. The Sherman brass is ADG 300 prc brass that is headstamped 30 Sherman magnum. You can fire factory 300 prc ammo in a 30 sm chamber.
I was seeing some pressure signs on my brass at what I thought was a moderate charge weight of H1000. So I loaded up 30 rounds of 147 eldms, with varying charge weights of h1000 from 54-56 grains, using different combinations of varying neck bushing sizes, inside case necks lubed/not lubed, and...
I trashed my viper vise. Purchased the SAC bravo kit on Black Friday for $225 (cheaper now) and it is a much more robust and well built vise than the viper. Highly recommend purchasing this one over the viper.
Get them threaded to 1/2” and buy 1/2-5/8 adapters. The adapters have shoulders on them and are cheap. The shoulders that the smith can make are nice, but I don’t really think it’s necessary.
Duds are possible from any manufacturer. The good thing with most Tikkas is their price
if they’re a dud. With you having the number of tikkas that you do and all of them being finicky are low but at the end of the day it is possible. At least it’s tikka dollars and not more expensive rifles...
Outside of the alleged trigger reliability of the Tikkas, I think the Tikka stocks are pretty functional for what they are. I've had XLR chassis, KRG bravos, AG composites, McMillans, etc., and where I'm at with my current level of shooting/hunting, the factory T3x stocks with a vertical grip...
Damn man, sounds like you've been through the wringer! Hope everything continues progressing in a positive direction with your recovery.
What ammo are you running through your 6.5 creed?
I’ve been playing my tikkas in 6.5prc and 6.5 creed, and they keep surprising me each time they’re shot.
Checking pressures while shooting 10 shot groups at 100 yards.
Prc with 147 eldms and N570: 2 shots with 55gr, [email protected], 2@56, [email protected], 2@57 gr.
Did the same thing with a creed, 2 shots at a...
I spent a year in the field as a wellhead tech and snapped a 60 aluminum with an extended lift too. The smaller backup on the ground held though. Being an office bitch for the last 10 years, I’ve lost track of some of my tools. Don’t worry, one ended up in my truck today before I left the shop.
Nice! If you haven't tried the UM Tikka rings, they're nice. Although with my 18" 6.5 CM, shooting factory 140 eldm and a 100 yard zero, I ran out of elevation at 13-ish mils with the 4-16 atacr a few weeks ago when attempting to hit a rock at 1200 yards. Wish they had a bit of cant to them but...
I lost my real cheater (4' metal pipe). Managed to use a short piece of PVC pipe, although sketchy AF, I managed to make it work. I would say the amount of the PVC that I used added about 6" to the wrench, which already had a 1.5-2' bar on it.
