Heading to Montana Nov 1st with my Dad and brother. Been hunting Wyoming mule deer for a few years in a row and wanted a new adventure. First elk hunt for all of us.
I think you’re going to have a hard time staying hidden in those trees once the leaves fall in later season. But if you think it’s the best option I would give it a shot. Try and draw back on a couple does during early season for practice. Not hard to move a hang on stand if you don’t like it
Three of my family members have ruger Americans and all of them have had problems with shells feeding out of their magazines. Don’t get a gun that you’re going to want to upgrade in a couple years
I also have the maven and really like it. I got it on sale during Amazon prime days last summer for around $600. I would really consider adding it to your list and look for used or a deal
i would say if you’re looking for any sort of quality buck on public land in Northern WI, you will have a disappointing hunt. If you want to just go hunt and shoot a buck you could have a great time
unless you’re going to be picky about antler size, any of those states you mentioned would probably fit the bill. I live in WI and my family has a cabin up north. I don’t hunt up there but there are ok deer numbers. Theres a lot of timber company land that is open to hunting. Decent amount of...
Thanks for the replies, it’s a good reminder that my boys will hopefully think it’s cool just because of the history. My wife shoots a .243 so that might be a good option and I can keep the .30-06 barrel as well
I finally upgraded to a Tikka in .30-06. I’m now in the predicament of what to do with my old savage axis .30-06. It has the factory stock and a cheap bushnell scope. I was thinking about selling it, but I’m sure I wouldn’t get more than $150 for it. And I’ve killed so many animals with it that...
My dad, brother, and I all applied with 0 points. Applied individually, not as a group, and plan on all going out for the hunt even if just one of us draw. Never hunted Montana before, so hoping to get out and learn some new areas
I live in Wisconsin, and do a lot of whitetail hunting. This rifle will be used some for that. So a lot of close shots under 150 yards.
However, this rifle will be used more for elk and mule deer in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado. I take one trip out every year. I will use it some at home in WI...
Thanks for all the replies, actually an interesting discussion!
Yes I would actually love to hear more of Forms opinion. Obviously he has more rifle scope knowledge and experience than I could ever dream of having.
I don’t think a fixed power is the ticket for me, since I will likely use it...
I recently picked up a used T3X in .30-06 and it came with a Leopold pic rail. I really like Maven optics a lot and was looking at the RS.1 or RS.2 but I’m having trouble justifying spending $1000 or even $600 on a scope when I see plenty of cheaper options like the Burris FF that seem to get...
In Wisconsin, we consider Busch Light as water. Does that count?
Honestly good on you for completing that challenge. I try to do a lot of small things to discipline myself. And they become habits so that I don’t even think about them anymore. Such as not going on my phone while my kids are...
Thought I would update the post and say that I took Agross advice and called savage. They sent me a replacement magazine no questions asked! Great company to deal with
would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to find a replacement magazine for my savage axis .30-06? Mine is junk and the only one I found is $100
