.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

My wife's first deer! 77 grain Black Hills TMK. 30 yards. Both lungs liquified, and a small exit wound. Deer ran about 40 yards. Couldn't be happier with the results, and my fears of meat loss on close shots have been put at ease.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Ok, how do you know? Did you put a 223 into the vitals of a charging pig to no effect? Or is this the margin of error argument where a marginal shot with a .30 would have done the job?

Does the 223/6mm for everything change when hunt cost $$$

That's true. It's also true that just because you haven't done something and heard you shouldn't doesn't make it a bad idea.

Does the 223/6mm for everything change when hunt cost $$$

A diy hunt is no less valuable to me than a fully outfitted hunt is to most of the guys I know who spend money on that type of thing. Time is my most precious commodity and I spend lots of it researching and preparing to hunt public land. No matter the price tag, I'll be carrying whatever rifle...

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Yes it is the Gen II. It's not Tikka smooth by any means but so far I love the rifle.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

That's awesome! Sounds and muzzle blast go a long way towards building a flinch.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Sighted in my wife's suppressed RAR 5.56 today with 55 grain ball. This was the first 5 shot group with Black Hills 77 TMKs. She said it was the first time she ever really had fun shooting. Life is good!

    What’s your go to?

I was using a muzzleloader or 870 with slugs when I lived in Ohio before straight wall. Without optics it was basically loud bow hunting.

    Down booties for stand hunting?

I've been using Arctic shield boot blankets over my boots for years. They work great and make less noise against metal saddle platforms/ hang on stands.

    What’s your go to?

I usually carry my Tikka t3x lite roughtech .308 with a dead air nomad can. 150 grain soft point, pick your favorite brand. Works great, but so have 6.5 cm, 30-06, 300 win mag, 7mm rem mag, .270... The more critters I shoot with rifles the more I find the caliber doesn't matter. Going to shoot a...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

It's hard to get over "conventional wisdom" you heard from your dad and uncles around the campfire. The problem is, most of them were just parroting what they had heard from someone else who also likely had little in the way of first hand experience with the subject.

Is a 30 cal big game rifle needed anymore?

You don't "need" a 30 any more than you need a v8 to get to the trailhead. I'm a proponent of smaller lighter guns, but I'll still tote my .308 around a fair amount this rifle season. I'm happy with the level of accuracy I get and I just really like the gun. I'll be carrying a 223 around some...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

Nobody is saying that Nosler Partitions don't work. We're saying they're not the only thing that works. You are tilting at windmills here.

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

Oh absolutely they could. I'm sure many on here have used them. I just don't think they'll do as well as a bullet that expands more rapidly on the smaller end. I guess I was kind of arguing 2 points made in the post about 300 WM and partitions. That's the combo I used to use. I never had a...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

By what metric?. They take more bullet weight and recoil to do the same job an easier shooting round can do. I only have personal experience with the 180 gn partitions. They worked well, but I have seen better performance out of smaller rounds. I have no reason to lug around a heavier, longer...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

The argument isn't that it won't work, it's that it's not the pinnacle. Round balls have been killing for centuries. Shall we argue that they are the pinnacle?
