Totally forgot this one from the spring
A 14 year old buddy of mine got a 6 foot black bear with a Ruger American 223 and 55 fmj. To quote the text I got after the kill...
"55 grain fmg.
Went through the the rib cage, lungs, tore up half the heart and lodged in the front leg"
I believe he...
Hopefully this isn't garbage...
I ordered a Davis Defense side charger upper

And a Recoil Technologies side charger bcg...
If he likes the RA 223 why not get one in 6.5 Grendal or 6mm ARC? Seems simple. Those are new calibers but with ARs being so popular I suspect ammo availability might beat the 243.
Interesting you guys love your UL UL rifles so much. I had a AR that was a bit lighter than my 308 but I just didn't like the awkward shape so it didn't get much use. But these UL UL builds look light enough to overcome that (and using a smaller scope might help I suspect). Waiting to get home...
I'm moving towards an UL UL build but I don't think I can afford a Solo upper for a while. If I machine an upper out I was wonderig if there is a real advantage to having the charging handle on one side or the other?
I assume left side is a bit faster to reload? Right side seems a bit better...
We used ELDM bullets (basically the same thing) in a 308 and 6.5 Grendal for multiple bears from a 6 foot grizzly and a 6 foot black bear down. No problems. I tend to think they do a bit better then more traditional bullets I used before. Use your ELDX with full confidence.
I've been in on something like 18 bear kills. I prefer the vitals a bit behind the shoulder. Bears can run fast and far on 3 legs the ones that we killed that way weren't anchored any faster than bears with a good lung hit.
I'd use a softer bullet than a Barnes though. They do seem to drop...
Bear and wolves are visible enough there people do get to "know " them. Which can be cool. I remember "Old Scarface" a big bear in Yellowstone. Interesting stories were told about him and it was interesting to know it was the same bear. But this is ridiculous. In a world as crazy as our getting...
My 168 gr ELDM went through a 6 foot grizzly just fine. That is not a huge bear but it exited. For comparison, a 260 gr Nosler Partition from a .375 Ruger failed to exit on two grizzly bears shot from similar angles (one was 6.5 footer grizzly that probably weighed at least 100 pounds more...
ThunderJack, are those boots zero drop style or do they have a tall heal (something I don't care for). They would appear to be a bit of a compromise between true mukluks and a boot. For the price they look cool.
I have not used the big name hunting packs but i have logged a lot of miles backpacking and hunting
For me easily reachable side pockets are really important. It's nice to grab your water bottle or snacks without taking the pack off.
Second a frame is a must. Even if I'm day hiking I'm...
Finally broke down and ordered two lowers and parts kits. Its a long winter so I'll be experimenting.
Anybody have any idea how rugged those discontinued Burris Micro Prism 1X scopes are? I forgot I have one but its like 4 oz with a very fine reticle. If you wanted to really shave weight that...
Rain gear that stays waterproof would be awesome. A totally non breathable jacket with generous ventilation is one idea.
Also in rain I always get water up my sleeves even if the rain gear is new and still waterproof. Drysuit style gaskets on the wrists would be cool but that would affect...
I like mukluks in Alaska but not for mountain hiking. I know a musher who really likes Neos overboots. Over barefoot shoes they might work.
But I still like normal shoes/boots if I can get away with them. So those Vivo Barefoot shoes look intriguing.
Nice shooting. I always figured hunting is hunting, all fun and challenging. My adopted son was probably more exited about a spike buck he shot than a bear in Alaska. Growing up in Hungary and then Alaska I don't know how many deer he's even seen.
Sadly I probably won't get to try a .223 for a...
If that is a non gas build with the BCA upper I'd love to hear about it. Thinking of turning my 6.5 Grendal into a straight pull, mostly so it is quieter with a suppressor.
A suppressor is really nice in close hunting because you don't have to worry about getting ear pro on at a moments notice. I lost some hearing from missing that once and I don't want a repeat. If you can legally have one where you hunt I'd spend money on that before I change rifles or scope.
As...
