I’ve never understood the argument of carrying a smaller pack instills discipline to avoid overpacking. Just don’t pack it… it’s like saying I wear a smaller belt to dinner to avoid overeating…
Thanks, this is really helpful from a practical standpoint. It’s romantic to talk about fishhooks, flint, spears, and twine but the reality is all of that is antiquated with recent technology like an Inreach. If I’m in a survival situation I’m hitting the button, so good to know how the...
I believe we overthink food, supplements, etc way too much - and it seems people are beginning to catch on. Humans have been evolving for 200,000 years on the diet available to us over that timeframe. Processed food has been around for less than 75 years. Eat as much natural, non-processed...
Even though you don’t intend on shooting off it, suck it up and carry the extra weight of a solid tripod. Skinny and light tripods are nicer to carry but if they shake then it’s just useless weight. I would much rather cut weight somewhere else…
Depends on your glassing style… binos on tripod and spotter for closer look? In that scenario I prefer straight. Picking apart a hill for hours? Angled. Glassing uphill? Definitely angled. Glassing downhill? Straight but angled works okay.
Some say they prefer the packability of a...
For western hunting, and in most scenarios, carrying a spotter is worth the weight for me. I like watching game and I’ve seen way too many cool things with a spotter over the years that I now view the added weight as a sunk cost. For example, during spring bear this year I watched two wolves...
Side or rear compression straps on the pack. Based on my experience quick access while hoving it is overrated. If I’m in gamey country my rifle is in my hand. Otherwise it’s on the pack and in reality easy to drop pack, unclip, and settle in for the shot.
More bag than you think you need. Sure, it’s easy to pack everything neatly while at home, but in the field when you are tired, cold, dark, windy, rainy, etc the reality is you throw crap in the bag and get moving. I’m not fighting my bag and playing Tetris… that patience is reserved for my...
Better way of attaching a handgun holster. I’ve run the marsupial under-bino holster and hoskin/gunfighter underneath my typical bino harness. The best so far has been the hoskin/gunfighter but it’s a bit of a FAF when shedding/adding layers. I like having everything I need for the final...
In my opinion a bipod is useless if it’s not steady, which for me meant atlas at 14-17oz depending on the model. At the range I never shoot off the bench if I can avoid it.
After converting to a lower recoiling round, more practice and moving to arca, I ditched the bipod for backpack hunts...
I’m a big fan of having a removable hood on my higher loft down jackets as I normally layer with my raincoat over the top for better durability. The hood can also be unzipped and used if you’re using a quilt. I use a montbell now and really like it … 13.7 oz in size medium and much warmer than...
I’ve stopped wearing gaiters unless long miles in snow, lots of moisture, or several creek crossing are on the menu. Now use Fjallraven keb pants and apply extra wax below the knee. I find the Kebs more simple and saves some weight.
100% yak wool for the win. I was a diehard Darn Tough user until I tried yak. Much less sweat and warmer feet. Yak is all I use now for hunts and the DT have been relegated to around town.
Thanks @Mark at EXO . Can you share how much potential weight savings we’re talking about in a 5,000ci configuration?
Just my $0.02, but I view the bag (not frame) as a replaceable commodity after a few seasons (like boots, clothes, etc). I’m more concerned with failure (which would make a...
