I left the pup at home so I could get some shooting in last Friday. The old man was working hard to keep his starter position. He had 2 400 yard plus tracks on cripples. Solid dog work with mediocre shooting still ended with limits.

It wasn't very long ago that you could buy your NR WT tag on Thanksgiving week when you got to ID. If you tagged out you could go buy your additional tag.

My dogs have pointed several, but I haven't targeted them with a dog. Always gets the heart going when you expect a pheasant to flush, and it's a flock of turkeys that sound like an Apache helicopter taking off.

It's a Stealth Beavertail 2000. Here's the only picture I have of the entire boat. I run a little electric motor on it not seen in this picture. The downside is that it's really heavy so you don't want to have to drag it very far.

Just finished up an upland roadtrip. My old dog is showing his age but the pup had a real breakout afternoon hunt in ND. She went on a terror, pointing 2 roosters and 6 different hens. Tracking some for 100-200 yards before locking up. Definitely a highlight of the trip.

You can buy a point right now without paying for the tag.
You also won't be able to buy a point next year when you apply, so if you buy a point this year you will only have 1 point going into next year's draw.

OR upland opener over the weekend. The pup did pretty good for not having many bird contacts before this. Heading out on Friday for an upland road trip through MT & ND. Hopefully get her lots of reps on that trip.

I've done the planted birds, pigeons, etc. This just sounds like a better scenario that you don't have to worry about your pup catching anything.

Do any of you upland guys work your young dogs on wild birds pre-season? If the pup is steady, flush the real birds, fire a shot, and toss a dead bird out of your bag?
