100% agree with reading the hunt contract before paying a deposit.
And then obviously once you agree to the contract, sign it and submit your deposit with the signed contract.
The contract will tell you all the terms:
-Total cost you pay the outfitter
-Year/season you will be hunting
-What...
You probably could take your own food. Especially if you had food allergies.
My sheep hunt has been my only guided hunt. What I learned while researching and in my experience the outfitter is usually prepared to supply all food once you arrive at the outfitter's location/base of operation...
Thank you! Yes 2024
I knew that one client did not see a legal ram, one of the guides told me that. I had not heard that a second client did not see a legal ram.
I talked with 3 other sheep hunters at the lodge before/after my hunt and each of them was successful
I would highly recommend talking to Tyrrell's Trails for Alaskan Dall sheep if you haven't already. They are a top notch crew!
I hunted with them for Dall sheep in August and got kicked out of the <1 club with a great ram
The USFWS management plan objectives for GYE and NCDE to be returned to state management have been met. I believe states should manage grizzlies in these areas.
The grizz killed in the bighorns was killing cattle otherwise my guess is it might've gotten relocated closer to Yellowstone...
Archery or rifle?
Keep an eye on if your limited draw elk unit is a general deer unit during the same hunt dates. That happened to me one year and I ran into so many deer hunters that I thought I was hunting a general elk unit.
I use aluminum trekking poles for the same reason listed above. If it bends you can still use it.
I would get adjustable. Travel through an airport and then if/when you put them into your pack(say for a stalk) they are more ergonomic.
- I'd look into cam-lock vs twist lock if you go adjustable...
You should be happy with your choice.
I used the SG sky archer 6,400 for an AK backpack dall sheep hunt in August. I would not hesitate to use the pack for a sheep hunt again.
There were a few times I thought I could've used a little more space in my pack, but looking back it worked great...
Wyoming keeps a public google sheet on the G&F website for fall and spring black bear hunting seasons to track harvest.
In my opinion, the sheet is the easiest way to tell what units are still open to hunting, and which have been closed.
Otherwise I think they have a phone number you can call...
I took a bipod along on my sheep hunt this last August. It probably makes the rifle weigh a pound extra. I run a Harris 9-13". Don't remember specific model right now...
But I would make the same choice if I am ever able go go sheep hunting again.
I didn't end up using my bipod when shooting...
I used the 15 degree Stone Glacier bag in the Brooks Range this August. Had a couple days where we were snowed in our tents around 6,000 feet of elevation. Had slight condensation on top of the bag in the mornings but it dried out during the day.
I also would wear/place damp clothes inside the...
What is the "longer range" maximum distances you are willing/planning to hunt at?
These are the 100 yard groups (handloads) I'm getting with a Weatherby Mark V Hunter. Not 1/2 MOA, but still sub MOA.
The full description of my rifle setup is in an earlier reply in this thread. MSRP for my...
I took a Weatherby Mark V Hunter in .280 AI to AK this August. My rifle setup includes Talley scope rings/bases and a Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44. I run a Harris bipod, I think it's a 9-13 inch. I do not run a sling.
If I remember correctly, this setup weighs 8.5 - 9 lbs.
Biggest thing I don't like...
This August I took kuiu attack, stone glacier m5 rainpants, and lightweight merino long jons to Alaska.
I ended up wearing the merino long jons and m5 pants w/gaiters all 12 days I hunted. I liked being able to open the side zips from my hip to the top of my gaiters to regulate heat when...
I wouldn't try it if it was not thoroughly cooked to avoid risk of parasites.
I've used mtn lion burger and made casseroles and then chislic pan fried in butter.
But yes mtn lion is similar to pork and very good in my opinion.
If I get the opportunity to harvest another lion, I plan to take...
