OP here, I was able to test again today and results were satisfactory, group opened up to about 1.3 inches, which I can live with. I can't explain the bad flyer I originally experienced.
And here's the thread already covering all of this and more, and there's other threads that you can look up too

There's no one size fits all, some folks that use running as their primary fitness exercise do quite well. It's not for me, but there are no hard and fast rules about running and elk hunting, works for some, not so much for others. I've even known a few hunters that never worked out and could...
Hell, I've been elk hunting CO for 25 years and I don't talk like I'm an expert, so he shouldn't be. I have ideas and I know what works for me, but far be it from to say it's the only way......he never stops saying this is the way it is, no ifs, ands, or buts. He goes on an on about brush...
Not everyone can make multiple 16 mile round trips, in fact few can, no idea if the OP can......but if the OP has never packed heavy weight for long distances, he might be surprised how painful it can be, and in all likelihood won't be able to complete it.
Like I said, never had a flyer like that in my life and rifle shoots good, it's a 300WM in tikka superlite with a leupold 3.5X10 40mm. Never had the first issue with the setup, shoots fine.
I will try again next time I'm at the range in a week or 2.
As others have mentioned, hunting partners are not required, but you seem to be of the mindset that you have to have one. Some people are wired that way, I get it, especially if you've never been before. I would seriously consider going solo if I was you.
I hear you...I put on 2 pieces, one north/south, one east/west....I've never had a flyer like that in all my years of shooting so I figure it had to be the tape.
I'll try again, maybe with just one piece.
I try to account for everything that could go wrong on an elk hunt, so I've been thinking about putting something over the muzzle to keep out sticks debris, mud. Been meaning to for years.
I read where someone uses electrical tape, so while at the range yesterday, I put some electrical tape...
Agreed, it sounds good when you're sitting at home rested and well fed and you've never tried 7 miles in the mountains loaded down, it's another thing when you're tired, sleep deprived, pack feels heavy, and not seeing any elk. Would like to see a post hunt writeup.
In southern CO last year where I was, 2nd rifle, it got down to low single digits 3 nights and didn't get above 30 during the day, coldest I've seen it in the last 25 years. I stopped bringing insulated coveralls because I never used them in the last 15 years, could've really used them last...
That does look nice, adds almost no weight to my hiking sticks, durn, something else I gotta have.
I also use this, attaches to hiking sticks, adds almost no weight - https://www.amazon.com/Doc-Bs-Attachable-Shooting-Rest/dp/B075BRLLQ2
I like multiple options.
