Agreed. I packed 3000 ish calories per day on last years elk trip and couldn't eat it all. My son on the other hand scarfed up every last calorie that he brought along.
I'm getting very interested in mixing in some bird hunting since a few guys have mentioned it. I think it'd be a great thing to mix in with the big game & fishing. From what I'm hearing, I'm assuming a guy could be successful without a dog?
Sounds a lot like what I have planned. I'm thinking if I do stay at the truck for a night or two, I'll just sleep in the back seat floor since my back seat folds up to provide me with a very roomy sleeping area. It doesn't allow me to fully stretch out lengthwise, but it's enough for a good...
A lotta great advice. Just the kind of stuff I'm looking for! I never thought about the solar shower. But yeah, I thought about the meat, and when I nock down that elk, I was planning on having a locker process & store it until the entire hunt is complete. Getting a deer or bear tag is another...
Thanks for the advice. No I've never done a hunt of this length before. I'm for sure thinking of coming back to the truck for a couple days of r & r as needed, or even a motel for a night or two. I'm sure I'll need to do laundry a couple times as well.
I'm contemplating a one month solo trip to Wyoming in 2023, which is when I'm tentatively going to retire. I'll be 56 yrs old, health is good, fitness level is good. I should have enough points to draw a general elk tag, and a type 1 antelope tag in the unit that I'm looking at. My plan is to...
This is a great thread, thankyou for starting it. It reminds us all to take notice of the simple things in life that make us happy, and sometimes we take for granted. It's very easy to fall prey to all of the negative bullshit that's on tv & social media.
I love my Minus33 short sleeve merino shirts. Well made and durable. I'm not unhappy with my Black Ovis long sleeve merino either. Thinking on trying their short sleeve. I think they currently have the black ss on sale for $35-40
-create a detailed monthly budget & allocate a place for every dollar.
-review your tv & cell phone, auto ins. plans once a year to find out if you qualify for better rates.
Iowa law enforcement here. Plan on retiring in 2 yrs. Cant complain about hunting time since I get a lot of vacation & comp time, but I plan on doing a lot more in a couple yrs.
Beaveralum, come to Iowa. We're mostly conservative republicans, and we have lots of LE jobs. Most come with a hiring...
Check out Western Outdoor Adventures. (Colorado). They have a 3 day cow hunt in early January that is reasonably priced. I'm doing one this coming January. https://westernoutdoorsadventuresllc.com/fully-guided-hunts/ . They also have a kids cow elk hunt.
That Klymit static V insulated is super comfortable for me. It's a bit heavier than most, but after sleeping like a baby on it last Sept for 8 nights, I'll gladly take the weight penalty. I picked it up pretty cheap on camofire. I highly recommend it. Can't speak for any other brands.
Not sure what FS road you're planning on using as access, but North Derby road into Stump Park can be an absolute bitch. At least it was last Sept. in my opinion. We encountered a crap ton of recreational hikers/campers, who came in from the Stillwater Reservoir trailhead.
We cut the cord 5 yrs ago and don't miss cable or Direct TV. We went with Sling & the Amazon Fire stick. We're now dropping Sling and are going with Discovery + and Friendly TV. Sling has too many lengthy commercials, and we only watched about 3 stations. Saving $25 now. Plus we share Netflix...
Go to huntmap.com. They have outstanding topo maps of any GMU and you can pick your center point. You can also select between a normal paper map, or one of their indestructable ones for a bit more $.
