    Military service late in life

Then I don't think joining the military would be a very wise move.

How are people affording these crazy home prices?

Regardless, increases in house pricing have massively outpaced those in income:

How are people affording these crazy home prices?

Which is exactly why so many companies lease their buildings instead of buying.

How are people affording these crazy home prices?

I agree with that sentiment for sure, but I’d say that it’s suburbanization and all its associated sprawl, consumerism and emptiness that really alienates people both from the land and from each other. A well-designed city (e.g. Amsterdam, Vienna, Copenhagen…) is a beautiful, lively and...

    Best rechargeable headlamp

With this kind of runtime on the HM65R’s low floodlight, which is used most of the time, I haven’t even had to use my spare battery yet: The output and efficiency of these little things is insane.

Other investments exist, many of which don’t involve the constant maintenance and expenses. A home is primarily a box to live in.

    338 Lapua Improved recoil

OK, good luck with achieving that at 1000 yards under hunting conditions. 👍

    338 Lapua Improved recoil

For sure. 1000 yards isn't even hunting.

    338 Lapua Improved recoil

You can play around with the numbers here to see the effect of different bullet weights at different MVs but as others have said, a .338 Lapua in a sub-10-pound rifle is still going to have elephant-gun levels of recoil: https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/recoil-energy Note: Around 1500 m/s...

    Best rechargeable headlamp

Same here. Best headlamp on the market in my opinion; I can't believe how much runtime and brightness they can stuff into such a tough, compact package — plus the interface is perfect. The HM65R is brighter, simpler, lighter and lasts longer than my Petzl Nao+, doesn't have an annoying separate...

Mixing lots of powder to make your own “lot”?

The best part is that pretty much any reasonable powder charge will give the same accuracy as long as it's consistent.

Mixing lots of powder to make your own “lot”?

How is it statistically unpredictable, exactly? The bulk distribution of evenly-mixed consistent fine grains is about as predictable as it gets.

    Thoughts on GPO Optics

Yeah, that’s another reason I’ve never really considered them. If a company is going to call itself German Precision Optics and contract out the manufacturing to everywhere except Germany, then something seems a bit off.

    Is 55mm selling myself short??

Agreed; 55 mm is getting a bit marginal for a spotting scope. Even with 80 mm, I find myself wishing for more exit pupil size at high magnification.

    Weight loss meals

As I understand it, although they're better than consuming sugar, artificial sweeteners can still cause problems since they tend to mess with metabolic function by affecting things such as insulin and blood sugar levels. If you reduce your intake of sweetened foods and drinks, I find that...

    Whats the best of Vortex?

Alpha? No, but I will say that they're pretty hard to beat when it comes to value for money on the lower-range stuff. While I don't fully trust their scopes, Diamondback HD binoculars are insanely good bang for buck, and for what I paid for my Viper HD spotter, I really can't complain.
